A few unsolicited viewing recommendations for this week’s SUID Film Fest

If you didn’t have the pleasure of attending a screening at last year’s inaugural SUID Film Fest, I encourage you for your own sake to not let this opportunity escape you the second time round. This year the programmers have once again assembled a remarkable slate of films, many of which will be accompanied by Q&As with the directors and producers. As a film fan, it is close to utopia to have a festival of this quality here in our hometown. This year I (legally) got my hands on screener copies of some festival selections and have a few recommendations for films to check out this weekend.

Mayor’s Mix: 17 pretty great local songs for $5

So yeah, you can find it at the Electric Fetus. If you’re like me and you think it’s pretty neat that our little city produces so much incredible talent, maybe you should buy this CD. It has a low-key vibe to it, good for your family BBQ this summer …

An Open Letter To Our Community

Dear Citizens:

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” — Maya Angelou

And perhaps we can understand each other right here.

We, the members of our state and local community, ask you, the members of our state and local community, to join us in making Saturday, July 9, 2011, a milestone.

Duluth Rap Artist: Theory

Hey everybody, I’ve been looking at this site for awhile now but this is my first post. I realize this may not be the perfect place to promote myself, but I decided to give it a try.

I’m an 18-year-old kid, born and raised in Duluth, and I’ve been making rap for the past couple years. If rap music isn’t your thing, or you’re turned off by the occasional cuss word, then I may not be for you — not trying to offend anyone. But if you’re interested feel free to check me out at either of the following places.  Thanks for your time.

The artist selected will be given free instruction at the North Shore Iron Pour seminar and an honorarium of $300. They will see their cast iron manhole cover installed on Bob Dylan Way.

Duluth Summer Dance Music Festival

I have been tossing around the idea of wanting to throw a Duluth-based summer dance music festival. This festival would center around the theme of dance tunes and Minnesota (or greater Midwest) musical acts. This would not just include DJs, but a combination of bands, DJs, collectives, and whatever other kind of dance-oriented groups would be interested.

Dylanfest

What were the names of the people that formed the first Bob Dylan tribute band in Duluth, and where did they play? I suppose year would be good, too.

What was your favorite “Beer on the Tracks” moment?

Wild times on the train to Two Harbors, with a 90-minute delay on the return that is sure to become legend in Dylan Fest annals.
