Renegade Improv at Teatro Zuccone

Hey you. Yes, the guy sitting at his computer in his underwear “working from home.” Need an excuse to put some clothes on and do something?  Renegade Theater Company has live improv comedy every Friday and Saturday night at 10:30 at Teatro Zuccone. It only costs $5. Details at renegadetheatercompany.org.

Short Circuit at Teatro – Saturday

Duluth Short Circuit

An evening of experimental electronic music featuring Tim Kaiser, Low Gain and Talking Computron.  Ethereal sonic landscapes, 8-bit Game Boy mayhem and circuit-bent mash ups for all ages. Tell your nerdy neighbor!

Dr. Martin Luther King Through Kindergarten Eyes

I meant to post this last year, but I forgot. This is a picture that my daughter made in kindergarten. I found it in with some papers when I was cleaning her room and it just struck me right between the eyes. First, I thought it was all wrong: “What is that school teaching my daughter about Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr? I mean, she took away his whole essence, she’s stripped away his race, she’s missed the whole point …”

Photo exhibit anyone can enter

And it will test your creativity! The Duluth Photography Institute calls it “4x: A Print Exhibit” and the rules are simple and few: submissions must be photographic prints with one side being 4 inches and perimeters (distance all the way around) 60 inches or less. Deadline is Jan. 31 and the exhibit will be held in mid Feb. For all the other details and for questions, go to the DPI website at duluthphotographyinstitute.com.

Shawn Thompson Photography Exhibit

Featured photographer Shawn Thompson’s natural landscape photography will be exhibited at the Duluth Photography Institute, 405 E. Superior St. in Duluth through mid-February. There is a free public reception at the DPI facility on Friday, Jan. 14, from 5-8pm.

Shawn will be available to discuss his work and refreshments will be served. RSVPs are encouraged, but not necessary — e-mail dpi @ duluthphotographyinstitute.com, go to the DPI website at duluthphotographyinstitute.com, or look for the DPI on Facebook. For more information on Shawn and his work, go to shawnthompsonphotography.com.

Huck Finn

Just wondering what the PDD community’s thoughts and opinions are on taking the n-word out of “Huck Finn.”

Duluth Artist Paints Abroad

Ken2

You may recall Ken Marunowski, former UMD faculty member and local artist (who premiered his work locally in an unconventional venue, the gallery space at Chester Creek Books and Antiques, last Spring).

Ken has been painting abroad: France, then South Africa, then France again.

Maria Bamford is officially a freak

Former Duluthian Maria Bamford and her series of Target ads made AdWeek’s 30 freakiest ads of 2010.

Survival of the Funnest

Here’s another t-shirt gift idea for the person that has everything from former Duluthian Emily Kuznia. Emily lives in Florida now but she is a product of Duluth’s Central Hillside (began her artistic career at Nettleton, in fact). I was just thrilled to see that this t-shirt design of hers was a “derby” winner on shirt.woot.com

"Survival of the Funnest"

Ah crap … I guess you can’t buy it anymore, it’s a competitive t-shirt design site, and man are they ever competitive. Much to my own chagrin, it looks like her shirt was only available for a couple weeks, not nearly long enough for a procrastinator like me to get them into the various stockings that I host. But as long as I’ve gotten this far I might as well leave the post up, Hey, maybe it will generate enough demand to get more available. Or you could also contact Emily via her blog and tell her how cool the shirt is.

J. J. Summers Agency, 1973

I got one for the Duluth History Detectives. Where was the J.J. Summers Agency located?

I just received an art book of the famous photographer Stephen Shore, and it was the following photo.

Caption reads: J.J. Summers Agency, First Street, Duluth, Minnesota, July 11, 1973.

I enjoy the rare opportunity to track down the locations of old famous photographs in the area to rephotograph and want to find this one. A quick cruise through Google Street view show a could of store fronts which still looks similar (Glenwood Signs) that I’ll go inspect, but any first hand accounts of the location, or records of an actual address would be great. Visual identification may be hopeless if it has been tore down or remodeled in the past 37 years.
