FYI. Harold P. Erickson Library at Lake Superior College is among the 842 libraries and state humanities councils selected to receive the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf, a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities Bridging Cultures initiative. The twenty-five books and three films have arrived at the library. ALA will ship additional materials, including bookmarks, bookplates, and posters, in mid-February.
Prøof Magazine is proud to announce the online release of its second issue, (re)collection. This issue addresses the role of memory in the creation and perception of art. The issue features a rich variety of contributors, from the poet laureate of the state of Rhode Island to a teenaged graphic designer from Minneapolis. The art and writing within this issue is stark at times, funny at others, but all of it pulls at the threads of time and self, a craft exemplified by the work of the featured artist, Mayumi Amada. The issue is available online in its entirety, free, and, for Duluthians, come by to check out the print version next week at Prøve Gallery.

The Math Is Hard Network of podcasts and blogs is proud to announce the release of our second podcast property, Nerd Nite MN.
Nerd Nite is a national organization with local chapters, and this podcast features live recordings from the Duluth, MN chapter. Similar to Give and Take and Ignite presentations, Nerd Nite features smart, funny presenters speaking about nerdy topics that they are totally into, and can’t wait to share about. Topics can range from Japanese toilet technology to the collapse of the modern banking system, and everywhere in between.
Our first episode provides a detailed look at the past, present, and future of Scooby Doo. Presenter Luke M. is hugely passionate and informed about the topic, and it shows. You’ll laugh and learn at an equal clip.
I admit — I entered the Zinema’s “Doctor Who 101” with some trepidation. The organizer is the sharp, innovative Tony M., the real engine behind the Zinema for some time. (I know there was another architect, but frankly, some architects are engineers, while Tony is an artist, breathing life).

It is with great disappointment that I am closing Takk for Maten Cafe. It has been 4 1/2 years since I opened the cafe in the Sons of Norway building and 3 1/2 years since we opened in the Tech Village. The exact date has yet to be determined, but I should know within a day or two.
Many friends have walked through our doors and we leave with so many wonderful memories. We will truly miss all of you. Thank you for your kindness, support and patronage. If we don’t see you again before we close, we hope our paths will cross again soon. If you have any questions or comments, please send us a message.

Last night, I had the pleasure of preparing a TalkBack session on the Stage II production of Jean Paul Sartre’s “No Exit.”
We at Wildwoods are good partners with the education mission of Audubon Center for the Northwoods in Sandstone, MN. The staff there are warm, welcoming, and supportive, and have occasionally taken an unreleasable wild animal and given it a meaningful life as an education animal. Like this gal:
Five month old doe Netherland Dwarf and Lop mix. She will be representing a Eastern Cottontail rabbit since they do not tolerate captivity. She will be making appearances in MN Mammals, Animal Signs, and the Minnesota Wildlife evening program.

Let’s start with the basics. A healthy, wild bald eagle will not pose for a picture like this. So the very existence of this picture means that this guy is in trouble. We think it is lead poisoning.
This is our second eagle this weekend. It looks like another case of lead poisoning. They’re coming in thick and fast. Please, all you hunters … use non-lead ammo. You don’t want to leave a dead eagle behind you in the field.

Last night, Kate and I went with our friend and colleague Elizabeth to see Glengarry Glen Ross.
There was a time in my life when I liked Mamet plays — it overlapped sharply with the time in my life that I liked Quentin Tarantino films. And while Reservoir Dogs will always have a place in my heart, that place has changed. I now think of it as one of many average “double-cross” movies, rather than a pressure-cooker of male aggression. But when I was a kid, oh man, it was all about the tough guys.
