East Superior Street Parking

It seems to me that in recent years, with the additions of Zeitgeist Arts, Black Water Lounge, Carmody Irish Pub, Tycoons, etc. (not to mention the fabulous new product additions at the Last Place on Earth) the area surrounding the NorShor Theatre has gone from being a really easy place to find a parking spot to one where you either have to get really lucky or park in a ramp.

I mention this mostly just to stir up the pot so people can bitch about progress, but I also want to throw out two observational questions:

1) Are you like me and fear parking in ramps because so many TV shows and movies when you were growing up had scenes where people get ambushed and shot in parking ramps?

2) Doesn’t it seem like kind of trap that the Sheraton ramp is free at night … until 2 a.m.? So, you know, go get drunk — the parking is free. But make sure you move your car before you get a cab home.

Kauzlaric Woods: Where in Duluth?

Normally when we play “Where in Duluth?” there would be a photo that doesn’t blatantly reveal the answer. In this case, we have a photo that obviously was shot at Kauzlaric Woods. So more specifically we ask, “Where in Duluth is Kauzlaric Woods?”

Once we’re done playing that little game, perhaps someone will be able to tell us who “Kauzlaric” is.

Last Election on Earth

Well, there it is. Jim Carlson’s name is on the ballot.

Haines Road temporarily open between Skyline Parkway and Morris Thomas Road

Haines Road has re-opened between Skyline Parkway and Morris Thomas Road. (Haines Road below Skyline, where it connects to 40th Avenue West, remains closed.) This means it is again possible to travel along Skyline across Haines Road.

Duluth-related zombie movie trailer

Apparently making homemade trailers for movies that don’t exist is becoming a trend. Here’s the latest in the series.

So long, Google AdSense … and other thoughts about objectionable advertising

It’s not likely you noticed it, but on Oct. 1 Perfect Duluth Day stopped mixing in Google-generated advertisements with the other ads that rotate over there on the right side of the page. It’s also not likely you care why, but we will explain nonetheless.

Select Images from Denfeld’s 1921 Oracle

The images in this post are all from various collages in the 1921 yearbook, so unfortunately they were about one-inch-high and don’t look very sharp when blown up. In gallery form, however, they are adequate enough.

The Duluth Mansion

Well, here’s something. I guess it’s the next in the series of weird Duluth-related trailers. (Previous one: Duluth: A new film by Nicole Brending).

Remembering the Duluth Bicycle Tree

Bicycle-Tree-Duluth

An old “Where in Duluth?” post reminded me of the “Bicycle Tree” near the College of St. Scholastica. Eight years ago, or longer, a collection of bikes started growing on a tree … or whatever happened. I actually never saw it, I only heard about it. Fortunately, Tony Rogers has a whole gallery of photos from 2004.

Construction at Spirit Mountain

Here’s what the new chalet at the bottom of the hill at Spirit Mountain looks like today. It should be complete during this ski season.

By the way, Mont du Lac recently built a new chalet at the top of its hill, which will open this winter. Neither ski area has plans for a chalet halfway down a hill.

Duluth: A new film by Nicole Brending

Apparently a short film called Duluth was completed in 2010. (I’ll note right up front that the trailer features brief nudity.)

Update: The trailer on Vimeo has been removed.

The URL given at the end of the trailer is to a site that doesn’t exist. There is, however, an Internet Movie Database plot summary, which reads as follows:
