This postcard of the Duluth Bethel building was mailed 105 years ago today — May 1, 1913. It’s not easy to read, but the sender appears to be “Auntie Paul” and the recipient is Mrs. Mildred Wilkinson of Clare, Mich.

The last line of the note on the card is also a little fuzzy, but the full message appears to read:

Well Mildred, I suppose you are a big girl now. Where are you in violin?

Duluth Bethel is a nonprofit organization that has offered chemical dependency rehabilitation and community correction services since 1873. According to Zenith City online, Bethel originally “operated out of a tent near the base of Minnesota Point.” The first Bethel building was constructed at 246 Lake Ave. S. in 1888. The structure in use today, shown in the postcard above, was built in 1910 at 23 Mesaba Ave.

The word “bethel” is Hebrew for “House of God.”
