In Essentia

Old guy in the locker room at the gym: “I’ve been on Park Point for 80 years.”

That’s a lot of seasons surrounded by water. He had encyclopedic knowledge of Great Lakes shipping. I learned that the Soo Locks are closed to salties for the winter, and that twenty-two ships are still waiting to come to the western terminus (and leave again) before the season closes.

Very sharp guy.

On another bench, another old guy, just as sharp, was becoming suddenly reacquainted, after 50 years, with two of his hockey players from his time as coach of East.

I learn a lot at the gym.
