Selective Focus: Sugar on Top Sweet Shop

Kristina Amys makes elaborate, detailed cakes and baked goods. After stumbling into success with her decorating skills, she left her corporate job to build a business based on food and art.

KA: My main medium is sugar! Whether it’s buttercream, fondant, gum paste or chocolate, I make art out of food! How cool is that job right? I actually started decorating cakes in 2009 when I was planning a very special baby shower for a dear friend. I had my heart set on a very specific cake and after much debating decided to take a stab at it myself. It turns out I was pretty good at it and I uncovered a hidden talent that I didn’t even know I had. After that word of mouth spread like wild fire and people started asking me to make cakes for their special occasions. Never in a million years did I think I would be making cakes for a living!

This birch bark cake was for a wedding at Grand Superior Lodge. It was an amazingly beautiful rustic wedding on the shores of Lake Superior. The cake fit right in with the woodsy decor and was an absolute show stopper!

It all started in 2009 as a little fun and over the years blossomed into a full time business! Last Fall I resigned from my corporate job to peruse my business full time.

This floral cake was for a birthday party. It was inspired by a young lady that wanted a bright beautiful floral cake for her special day. When I started making the different flowers with different colors of frosting, it truly came to life!

The challenges are defiantly time and energy. Sometime I feel like people do not totally understand what goes into making a cake. It’s not just about baking and decorating. So much time and energy goes into planning the cake with each client, buying the right ingredients, sourcing the right materials needed, then baking, decorating and delivering the cake! There is so much behind the scenes that happens before a cake order can ever begin! I will say though that the most rewarding part is seeing the cake come to life from an idea on paper to a work of art! It is so fun to see my clients eyes light up when they see it for the first time! Most of them don’t want to cut into the cake! Their reactions are priceless and remind me each time that this is why I do what I do!

This axe and stump cake may be one of my favorites cakes to date! It is completely edible and rumor has it when you cut into it, it has red and black buffalo plaid on the inside! It just doesn’t get much sweeter than that!

You can view all of my work on my Instagram or Facebook. I am currently building my website which will be up and running in 2018! For now check out the following links to see some of my edible art!

This Tow Mater Cars cake was a big hit for a very special little boys birthday! Creating carved character cakes is so much fun. Seeing them come to life is one of the best parts!

I am currently busy working on my website and getting that up and running for my customers! I’ll be able to take orders and payments though the website and my clients will be able to view my galleries, menu and pricing right on the site.

I make more than just cake! These Minnesota and Lake Superior shaped sugar cookies are a recent project I’ve been perfecting this Fall. They have become very popular bringing big smiles to a lot of faces! Watch for more info on these being available for shipment soon!
