Fisk Rubber Company had retail stores in 40 states during the 1920s. The Duluth sales and service station was at 749 E. Superior St. The photo above was shot by Hugh McKenzie and dated Oct. 23, 1920. Below, the same location at Eighth Avenue East and Superior St., shot Nov. 7, 2017.

You can see the building in the background of a 1983 photo from the News Tribune Attic, shortly before it would have been demolished for the freeway extension.

At some point during its life, part of the front of the structure was removed to create a gas station. But the back portion of the building remained intact with a few exterior alterations.

I remember walking past that place every Friday after work. There was a liquor store in either the Amemdola Building or maybe further East closer to the Arrow Chevrolet dealership. I got hit by a car one night crossing Washington Avenue by someone taking the turn up the hill a little too fast and me in a dark suit. The landscape changes leaving our memories in the rubble...

I remember back in the late 1960s it rained so hard one day that even the Catholics were wearing rubbers!

This 1982 clipping, posted by Gary Androsky on the Old Duluth Minnesota / Superior Wisconsin Facebook page, shows Como Oil Company occupying the Fisk Rubber Company building before it was demolished in 1983.
