Volunteers wanted for fixit clinic in September

Duluth Technology Co. is organizing a fixit clinic, modeled after one held in Minneapolis this summer. We would like to make the fixit clinics a regular occurrence, but the very first one is also going to be a grand opening event for Duluth Technology Co.

Fixit clinics are community events where people can come and get help fixing household items from volunteers who know how to fix things or like to tinker and problem solve. Often, the items are things that would end up in a landfill otherwise. It’s fairly informal and the idea is for people to learn from the volunteers too so that participants leave with a little more confidence in their ability to fix things.

We are looking for volunteers who like to fix things to participate in this clinic! We’d like to encompass as wide a range of things as possible — electronics, computers, small appliances (toasters, etc), bikes, clothing, anything. Volunteers would bring their own tools to use and we’d try to have some spare supplies. We would also have computers available to look up parts if one was needed. For example, at the fixit clinic we attended, volunteers who sewed brought their sewing machines and sewing baskets, and the volunteer who helped us with our toaster had his own soldering iron and screwdrivers.

We’re planning to host the fixit clinic on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It would be nice if volunteers could stay the whole time but we wouldn’t be opposed if someone could only volunteer for a portion of the time.
