First Tick of the Year — 2014 Edition

It was actually last week — Friday, May 23 — when the first tick of 2014 crawled up my neck after a short hike near Kingsbury Creek. Although this time of year is prime time, ticks aren’t expected to be worse than usual in 2014. Mike McLean, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District, told KSTP-TV, there was a “depression in their numbers” in 2013 because of late-season snow, and that could carry into 2014.

Posting about the first tick is an annual tradition at PDD. Here’s the rundown of past tick posts:

I had my first deer tick on May 16th out at Ely's Peak. Get your dogs protected!

Please see my prior posts to emphasize how dangerously ill ticks can make you, and how clueless some local doctors are.

I've never had a tick in Duluth and its surrounding area, and I've spent a large portion of my life running around the hillside. I suppose they don't like my blood.

I must have been lucky, but that extended luck did come back to bite me while camping about 60 miles south of here. We were walking through tall grass near a pond. Back at camp, I found about 12 ticks on me, some of them already dug in. That happened in the space of a about a half hour in the grass. It was hard sleeping that night thinking that there was one I missed.
