Farley’s Grill in Downtown Duluth

Farley’s Grill opened two weeks ago at the old Mr. Nick’s location — 220 W. Superior St. in Downtown Duluth.

The Duluth News Tribune reports: “A new lease worked out with building owner Nick Patronas – Mr. Nick himself — commits (owners Kelly and Elizabeth Trumpold) to 7½ years.”

That should make this the last time for a while that we’ll need to trot out the ol’ 220 West timeline:

  • Farley’s Grill – April 2014 to present
  • Z’s Deli – January 2013 to March 2014
  • Jalapeno Express – October 2011 to August 2012
  • Maya Mexican Restaurant – June 2010 to April 2011
  • Grapevine – 2008 to 2010
  • Taj India – 2005 to 2008
  • My Buddy’s Place – 2002 to 2005
  • Mr. Nick’s – 1998 to 2002
  • Burger King – 1996 to 1998
  • Mr. Nick’s Famous Charburger – 1970 to 1996

Below is the very colorful menu.

Appears to be essentially the same menu as the Hermantown location.

That is quite the commitment, given that location's history.

I hope they know what they are getting themselves into.

To be fair, Z's was making a pretty good run of it and appeared to have been breaking the cycle. But Z was going through chemo, based on the signs posted in the restaurant, so that's what closed them down; cancer, not poor business planning or lack of customers.

Farley's will do well. They're catering to the lunch crowd, and actively seeking evening business by reaching out to bars. In the past, others remained open into the evening, whined when no one showed up, and closed down after the costs of staying open late negated their busy lunches. IMHO, the location just has a history of tenants with unrealistic expectations, it's not cursed.

Yay! Another burger place in the Twin Ports!

Why can't we get a GOOD Mexican/Thai/Chinese/Indian place? What about Korean BBQ? Brazilian steak house? Cajun/Creole? Seafood? German? Mediterranean? Middle Eastern? French?

If I want a good burger in this area, there are already options. Frustrating...

Well, Mexico Lindo in Cloquet, unless they changed something there when they opened the Duluth location, is still pretty damned good for Mexican food.

The problem with the Duluth location, or so it seems, is that they tried to teach people how to cook the food rather than splitting up the original cooks between the two locations to ensure the quality remained the same.

Granted I haven't eaten at the Cloquet location in a while, but last time I was there it was great. I spent a good six years in Texas, so I have at least an understanding of what "good" Mexican should taste like.

Also, Sala Thai in Woodland is quite good for a local Thai restaurant. I enjoy their curry immensely.

After five trips to Mexico (Mayan Rivera area) Colorado, Vegas, New York my standards for good Mexican food may be too high. I agree the Cloquet Lindo is pretty god for Minnesota. The Duluth Lindo is SO inconsistent. One day the carne asada is tender, charred nicely, the next time, terrible. I've had the same experience with their fish tacos and a few other items. I just get fajitas now, at least I won't be disappointed.

My fiance and I have tried repeatedly to get Sala to make our food SPICY, so far no luck. I don't know if they don't take us seriously or what.

I just wish there were more options in this area. Burgers and pizza are covered already.

Check out Pak's Green Cuisine at 4131 Grand Ave, if you want some Asian fusion. Pak is pretty accommodating, tell her you want it Thai hot and are serious.

Whomp whomp. One year later I was totally wrong and it looks like the downtown location is closed. Perhaps there truly is a curse.
