Is Duluth unfriendly to posters?

I’m old school and used posters to promote an event. I’ve noticed a numerous amount of posters for my upcoming Minerva Zine Party have gone missing or were stolen from sites like Pizza Luce, Carmody, Sir Ben’s. I used multiple tacts and tape to secure them. More Duluth locations require you have the managers approval and are not posted timely. It’s extremely frustrating and expensive for a DIY zine publisher. Any tips, ideas to take out poster thefts, or solutions are appreciated!

I too had this same problem when my bike was stolen. I'd go in to the businesses and ask before getting clearance, but I'd go back the next day only to find my flyers no longer up.

The Duluth libraries, and Big Apple Bagels in Superior, have all been poster friendly in the past, if those places would reach the people you want to reach. Also the wine store at Mt. Royal always has posters that are a) there for a while, but b) rotated out when the dates have expired.

Good luck!

@jwood13 I'm glad it's not just my posters but pissed at the same time. I wish people were more considerate.

@emmadogs I printed more posters today so I will definitely poster these places asap. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I poster for a lot of events so I revisit places where I post. I try to eliminate bad postering spots from my rota because it's a waste of time and material. Some good places include: DeWitt Seitz, Electric Fetus, Beaner's Central, Public Library, and Hanabi. If you see a lot of posters covering other posters, it's a safe bet yours will be covered or down pretty soon.

The Whole Foods Co-op is also good about putting up posters. Give it to the info desk and they manage them. No one will slap up a non-time-dependent poster on top of your big-event-this-weekend there.

I try to have decent posters and have had my share of theft and "over-posts." Here are some of the locations I can remember off the top of my head that I have had good luck with: Music-Go-Round, Great Northern Music, the bakery and hardware store out in Lakeside, Jitters, Fetus, most of the laundromats, Super One in the Plaza, Jimmy Johns, Duluth Coffee Co., Papa Murphy's (I think), Duluth Grill, that art galler by Father Time Antiques and Rocky Mountain Candy, Duluth Pack (in the canal), and there's an old wooden kiosk thing up by Danny's Hardware in Woodland. If I think of more, I'll post them.

If you make a poster good enough that people are stealing it, then you have done your job. Just go back and put up a new one, drive around and see where your target audience hangs out, and take it as a compliment when it goes missing.

You could also post it on this site for people to see.

@Endion True. I have re-postered and made the poster ugly. Hopefully the addition to the poster will stop folks from removing it!

The workers at Positively 3rd Street Bakery have not seen the sun for 30 years because of all the posters in the windows. Poster-on-poster violence has not been a problem.

Ideas to take out poster thefts? Design uglier posters. ;-)

Really nice article in the DNT today:

Zine celebrates 2 years of supporting feminism

Congratulations!

I have not read your zine, and am very interested in doing so. My problem is that I am rarely at the outlets where you leave your zine, and health issues keep me home at night, so no making the scene tomorrow night. It sounds like it is published every few months. Anyway, it would be great if you could give us a head up, via PDD, when a new issue is set to be released. I promise I will actually get downtown to get a copy then!

Speaking of zines a feminism, if you're a PC gamer, you should check out Gone Home. It features lesbian/feminist story lines, with a background of riot grrl music and home made zine art.

@emmadogs Thanks! If you have access to FB, go to www.minervazine.com, and send me a message. I'd be happy to mail you a copy of our next edition or do distro somewhere you frequent. The last time I distro'd I did put some at the Coop, maybe you frequent there? Best~

Done and done.

Thanks again, I am really looking forward to reading this. I am curious to know what the feminist landscape looks like here. I should add that I am embarrassed not to know this already. One of these years, I will be able to leave full time employment, and start volunteering for feminist causes and organizations.

In the meantime, thank you, sincerely, everyone who supports feminist businesses, organizations, arts, etc etc etc.
