Kauzlaric Woods: Where in Duluth?

Normally when we play “Where in Duluth?” there would be a photo that doesn’t blatantly reveal the answer. In this case, we have a photo that obviously was shot at Kauzlaric Woods. So more specifically we ask, “Where in Duluth is Kauzlaric Woods?”

Once we’re done playing that little game, perhaps someone will be able to tell us who “Kauzlaric” is.

Perhaps it refers to Robert Kauzlaric, the playwright whose play, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, was performed in 2008 at Teatro Zuccone by Tugboat Children's Theatre?

Robert Kauzlaric is a former Duluthian and playwright, probably best known for his play The Truth about the Three Little Pigs, but I'm thinking this little chunk of forest is dedicated to Russel Kauzlaric, an employee of MNDOT who died unexpectedly at a fairly young age back in 2005.

It's to the right of Raleigh St. in West Duluth between 69th and 70th avenues west, and it could hardly be called a wood. It's more like 50 dead untended saplings, and the four sickly trees that gutted it out on their own. It's a shame really.

Barefootknight is correct on the location, and therefore he is today's "Where in Duluth?" champion.

Here's the view looking down to Raleigh Street.

And here's the view looking up at the "woods" from Raleigh Street.

My guess is that TimK is correct on where the name "Kauzlaric" comes from, but I don't know for sure.

About five years ago the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation cleaned up this area, which is the former location of a roundhouse for the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railroad. So it makes sense that the name of a DOT employee who died in 2005 would be attached to it.

Here's a map of the area from a 2007 Planning Commission meeting that shows the old roundhouse:

The image in the map is from before 2007. I'm not sure when the roundhouse was torn down, but it was quite a few years prior to 2007.

Yes, it was named in honor of my father, Russ Kauzlaric. The obituary link above is correct.

Rob, can you tell us if the naming of this area was more of a general tribute or if your father had any special connection to this spot? Just curious.

A little of both. From what I understand, there was (is) a *long* history with that location, tied-up in all sorts of painstaking environmental clean-up, planning, and future development politics/budgeting/etc. I don't know the details well enough to speak to specifics, except that my dad had been involved in his capacity as Assistant District Engineer for MNDoT and that when the naming of the area in its new form (still far from unfinished, as I understand it), they chose to honor his 40 years of service to the state by naming it after him.

This is a perfect example of what makes PDD so special. You can learn tidbits about something that you would never be able to find on your own.

When you have a hard to answer question about the area, someone almost always has the answer.

Don't know where to find something.. check PDD, a wealth of info!

Les, where can I get Angel Cream extract?

I am not Les, but you can get Angel Cream extract anywhere under the name "Cream of Tartar."

"Angel Cream" is simply another name for it.

Go back to other post discussing the batter. Barrett Chase hyper-linked the product. It's supposed to be "better than cream of tartar" when you read up on it, even though you can substitute one for the other. This thread is way off topic now.
