Update on New Stuff

Noodles & Company opened at the Miller Hill Mall yesterday, according to Business North.

Shake It, the new nutritional protein shake and juice bar in West Duluth (at the former Spirit Bottle Shoppe) will open Sunday if I remember correctly what the sign by the door indicated today.

Carmody 61, the new bar/restaurant in Two Harbors that is taking over the former Viking Legends opens on Oct. 1, according to co-owner Rick Boo.

7 West Tap House, Minnesota Wine Exchange and Canal Park Brewing are all potential late October openings, according to word on the street. (We haven’t mentioned Minnesota Wine Exchange on this site before. The location will be 3 W. Superior St., the owners are Brent Johanson and Debra Fellman, and the place will have a rotating selection of Minnesota wines.)

I'm getting excited for 7 West Tap House.  Hope it lives up to what they are trying to do.

I'm really looking forward to the Ace Hardware that's moving into the old Plaza Walgreens spot in the next month or two.

CVS opened last Sunday on Grand Avenue.

If Ace Hardware is moving into the old Walgreen's space that is awesome news. My life has never been the same since Daughtery's closed.

@ericswan: Ace Hardware is indeed moving into the old Walgreens space. I also have incredibly psyched for it.

Don't know if you're aware of it but there is an Ace Hardware up in Woodland. Family owned and local...just throwing it out there. And people who shopped at Daughtery's do shop there now, plus there is a former Daughtery employee who has worked there for four years now. I'm sure they would be happy to help you with your projects.

The Superior Street Ace is gonna be an awesome addition to this part of Hillside. It's only 10 blocks from the ranch and right across the street from the shop.

No offense intended, but 10 blocks is a little hard to pass on.

Hey, anybody heard/know what is going to replace the old Ground Round restaurant site?

Also, anyone know what (if anything) is going on with the old Hacienda site.  I see the windows all covered up and they've been closed since their fire.  Just wonderin.

Always exciting to have new places opening in town!

They've been hard at it in the Ace building. The freight roll-up door was installed Thursday, and they've been spiffing up the stucco-ish exterior for a couple of weeks. I think they have the majority of the interior work done, as I haven't seen near the amount of contractor's vehicles there in the last week or two as we had in the month prior.

I'm thrilled at the notion of being able to walk across the street when I need something specific instead of having Bill run up to Menards. Gonna make my life so much easier, for sure.

Ground Round closed in late 2010. It will be torn down and a new national retail complex will take its place.

Carmody 61 will be open in 10 days? I'm interested to see that happen.

Must agree with the addition of the Ace in this neck o' the woods being much welcomed. Although, I did like the challenge of fashioning a tool or hardware out of what was available.

Small hardware stores are often the only places that still cut keys by hand (versus from a template), which is great if you have an "uncopyable" master, an off-brand, or other weird keys.

Hallelujah for Ace! I've noticed some movement and repair work but this is the first I've heard. I live close by the location and am beyond excited.
Also pleased with Carmody 61 - great location. I intended on stopping for lunch when the Viking operated in the space but always chose another location due to friend's reviews of the food and service not being consistent.

7 West Tap House has a website now at 7westtaphouse.com. The site indicates a grand opening on Oct. 1, but the word from owner Rick Lampton is "the week of the 8th or so."

The Hacienda is moving into the Hacienda space.  The owner plans to open as soon as he's financially able to swing it.  He took a huge hit between the structural damage from the Sheraton construction and then the fire.  So I'm not sure how long it might take to get back up and running.

The latest word on 7 West Tap House is maybe an Oct. 15 opening.

Carmody 61 seemed to be kind of open this evening; there were cars outside but no sign up or in the windows. There seems to be a big handwritten sign in the door.

I'm looking forward to 7 West. It looks like the open date is now Oct. 15. According to the site apparently there is going to be 40 beers on tap available, and mainly American. The menu has a nice listing of burgers at a nice price point of around the $5 mark with specials, etc. That's great since I eat out downtown five days a week. Also I'm hoping that the prices of their burgers will bring down the prices at Dubh Linn at a competitive standpoint since they seem to be kind of expensive.

Oh oops, Paul did mention the 15th too. It would help if I read all the comments. Oh well ... anyway.

7West - meh. Good burger prices, but mediocre burgers - Inferno was not hot, and too much goopy mayo. Liked the crispy fries, but weak as on the Cajun seasoning. Was basically near-flavorless orange powder sprinkled on a random fry here or there. Beer was good. Never thought about water. Didn't care for how loud/bright it was. Reminded me more of a diner - so would probably like the atmosphere better for a cheap lunch, rather than the late dinner I had.

Carmody 61 - lunch last week was good - had the fish cakes (appetizer) 2 @ $6.99 as my meal, which were crispy (not at all greasy) and delish, although the tartar sauce was a bit salty. The pickled onions were a nice touch too, but the bed of mixed greens had several bits of old/shrively/beginning to rot greens = tsk tsk. Others had the Northern Dip with battered fries - was huge and they said good for the money (no mystery/fatty/chewy beef), and one had the lunch special (Grilled cheese and soup that day) which looked to be on Texas toast or some thick-sliced white toast and super super super cheesy - like tons o' stretchy cheese deliciousness. His bowl of creamy (I think wild rice?) soup looked delish too, although I'd not be one to order grilled cheese at a restaurant - but his whole combo looked really good, but I bet he ended up with an afternoon food coma from so much creamy soup and gooey cheese. Never did learn the 'special' price, but most of the menu items seemed reasonable and around $7 - not sure if the lunch menu was the same or different to dinner. Water was free and flowing! The server (who had worked for the Viking and was very attentive) also brought over a pitcher of soda for the one person who ordered soda for his refills. I've not tried the food at the Duluth location - is it the same? different?

Finally got to try Noodles - family in the cities has raved about it for ages. My Pad Thai was OK for the $5.89 total, not really very flavorful as I had hoped. Another had the Japanese Pan noodles, which looked better and he was happy, and another had Penne Rosa with Feta and chicken (not a lot of chicken from what I noticed), yet still liked it a lot. I was surprised to see they had wine/beer too.

Also had an overpriced-for-what-it's-worth dinner last week at the Dubh Linn too - I swear, that was the third strike = two bad lunches (fish and chips and bangers and mash) -- long waits when dead, inattentive servers overall, and crap/cold food (previously) and now one bad dinner (BBQ Pork - pork? slaw? what slaw? Two pieces of cabbage under a tiny bit of pork on a 6-inch bun) I'm done. Burger menu looked as if they copied the Anchor, but were so overpriced for burgers and salads. I've never been impressed by this place at lunch, happy hour, or dinner.

Very excited for the new Ace to open too, as it's close to me.

Noticed the Wine Exchange - what's its deal?

bluenewt

@ruby2sd4y - The food is not the same at the Carmody in Duluth. It's a more limited menu. But they do have a really good pasty. I think they get them from someplace on the UP.

Minnesota Wine Exchange is expected to open before Christmas.

Hmm did that Wine Exchange ever open? I walk/drive by it often but it seems like they never even opened yet, or are always closed.

On a side note, 7west is very unimpressive.

Our waiter didn't ask if I wanted change and just kept a 30 percent tip, if not more.

He literally grabbed my friends phone out of his hands to look at the text from the text club they have without politely asking.

Just a few minutes after taking our money he asked us to leave (and we were being civil not rowdy or anything) because he wanted to seat more people even though I saw some space avail. Makes me wonder if they are hurting, trying to shuffle people in and out as fast as they can.

On top of all that the the burgers were tiny and not very good. Sadly to say, I've had better at McDonald's.

Minnesota Wine Exchange did open, around the time that water main broke and flooded the Electric Fetus.

I think they keep short hours, but I did walk by once when it was open. Perhaps I'll investigate tonight.

I just realized there is a website and it does claim the Minnesota Wine Exchange is open.

The windows are so dark I assume the lights are off. That and I really haven't heard much buzz about this place ever since that one little story that mentioned they are opening soon, way back in September.

I'm hoping someone will have input on this place. The site says its 8 bucks for some bread and a side of olive oil? I guess I'll count on the wine selection being good!
