After-school volunteers needed for new program at Congdon Park Elementary

We are looking for volunteers on Mondays and/or Wednesdays from 2 to 5:15 p.m. (or any chunk of time in there!) starting next week and going until December 12 (or May 8 if you want to be with us the whole year!) We need volunteers to spend time with the kids, assist the class instructors and be positive role models.

The program will be at Congdon Park Elementary, which this year is located in Woodland Middle School’s old site at 201 E. Clover St.

General info about the program:

In partnership with the Grant Community School Collaborative, Congdon Park Elementary is excited to host a new after-school program called The Art and Science of Us. The program will involve students from Congdon and Nettleton schools in a performance arts-based class and a science-based class after school. Both classes will explore the topics of culture, race, and the human organism.

This program is an integration program designed to bring together students from both schools to make friends, learn from each other, and participate in fun, enriching activities together.

There will be two classes, a theater class and a science class. The theater class will work with instructors to put together and perform a play that explores the theme of characters learning to live and work together despite differences. They will learn to act, sing, build sets, create costumes and put on a performance.

The science class will learn about what makes us the same and what makes us unique by studying physical characteristics like hair and skin color and human anatomy like the heart and other internal organs.

Both classes will showcase what they learn at a special event at the end of the year. Students will present a theatrical performance and an exhibit at an event for everyone to enjoy.

Info for you if you want to volunteer:

Volunteers with the program need to attend two trainings starting next week. Trainings take place at Nettleton School at 108 E. Sixth St.

Training #1 takes place the week of Sept. 24, Monday through Thursday from 2:15 to 5 p.m. It’s the same training each day, and you just pick one to come to.

Training #2 takes place the week of Oct. 2, Monday or Wednesday. We hope you can come on the day you would be volunteering, so that you can meet the instructor and other volunteers you’ll work with.

E-mail Nikki Bollman at nikki.bollman @ gmail.com for a volunteer application and to let me know when you’ll be attending trainings.
