Dining Vegan in the Duluth Area

Being vegan, not vegetarian, has its challenges when dining out. I’m looking for suggestions of the best vegan eats in Duluth/Superior and the North Shore.

Chester Creek Cafe is always very accommodating... I had a friend in town who is gluten intolerant and the staff was really responsive. Sure the same thing for vegan diners.

You can get plenty of take-out stuff from the deli at Whole Foods Co-op.

And, depending on how far up the shore you're going, the co-op in Grand Marais also has vegan eats, and I'm fairly certain that Gunflint Tavern in Grand Marais has one or two vegan options (I know they have several yummy vegetarian items).

Pizza Luce has TONS of vegan upon request meals. Everything from salads to pasta and pizza. Tasty and priced a little more reasonably than a place like New Scenic (which is also awesome, but usually spendier than I can afford very often).

As much as I love the New Scenic, I just looked at their online menu and did not see any vegan dishes other than the house salad.

I appreciate you looking. Many places don't realize that Vegan means no Ceaser salad, mayo, egg, etc and I end up with lettuce and a glass of wine for dressing.

Pak's Green Corner is very vegan friendly. Most of the menu items have a vegan option.

Duluth Grill has numerous items with a vegan option.

Pizza Luce
Duluth Grill
Thai Kothrong
New Scenic Cafe

All have vegan or clearly vegan per request on their menu.

Places like Chester Creek Cafe and Nokomis are very accommodating when asked. Va Bene has been somewhat helpful.

I would love to go a chat with all the local restaurants about how they can tweak to meet vegan needs but always feel weird about going by myself and contacting. If anyone wants to join up with me to help talk to local places about vegan menu options, either ones they can create or ones that they might already have with a tweak or two of their current menu let me know. sorenconrad @ hotmail.com

Barrett is right about New Scenic, and I noticed that, too. I should have specified that I included them in my list because of the creative, capable staff. I think they would be happy to accommodate vegans. But you're right. Their current menu looks like a steakhouse.

The Scenic's menu is ever-changing based on the local availability and pricing of certain ingredients.

But as far as vegan offerings, I am sure they would be happy to accommodate any requests.

If anyone could successfully accommodate, it would be the Scenic, but here's the thing: No one wants to have to be accommodated. Usually, a lot of thought is put into the ingredients in a certain dish, and turning a non-vegan dish into a vegan one usually has lackluster results.

I think what the OP is after is a list of restaurants that specifically create great-tasting vegan dishes right out of the gate. That doesn't mean a cheese sandwich, hold the cheese. It means that the chefs put thought and effort into creating vegan menu items, and stand behind them in their vegan form to begin with.

Barrett has it right. Dare I ask for Vegan (no dairy or egg) baked goods also?

Coconut curry at Zeitgeist. That's the answer.

The co-op has vegan baked goods.

Cows are vegan, aren't they?

Hmm ... a hamburger sounds good.

I agree with this, I think it is especially vegan with cheese and bacon.
