What do the Cult, Bruce Springsteen, Garbage, Katy Perry, Coldplay and Run DMC have in common?

They were all available in special, limited edition releases for Record Store Day at Vinyl Cave.

I bought the Garbage 7″ and the Florence and the Machines 7″ in Superior; I’m stopping at the Fetus this afternoon to join them in the party.

From their press release: The original idea for Record Store Day was conceived by Chris Brown, and was founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally. This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various pRomotional products are made exclusively for the day… Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April.

Now back from me: Vinyl Cave is something I never entered before today. While I was there, I picked up the Art of Noise / Duane Eddy single of the Peter Gunn Theme (7″) for $1. I can see that Vynil, like comics, would be a total retro trip for me.

On the other hand, it’s also becoming a bit auteur, you know? I really almost bought that Katy Perry disc because, man, you can’t beat the design on a 12″ platter.

At the Fetus, Haley Bonar just started playing at 4:30 according to the clapboard out front. Meanwhile, inside, I picked up a prior RSD edition of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as well as a stack of CDs. The air was festive, although the food had nearly run out. Missed the Luce because I went to Souptown first.

It was a 7" single...

"Kurtz points to Bruce Springsteen as a constant supporter of Record Store Day from the start, consistently releasing exclusive material for the holiday. This year, Springsteen will release a 7-inch single of "Rocky Ground," off his latest album, Wrecking Ball. Kurtz also nods to "The Beatle camp," whose members seem to roll out yearly releases for Record Store Day (this year, it's a reissue of McCartney's first solo single, 1970′s "Another Day," with a B-side of "Oh Woman Oh Why")."
