R.I.P. Charlotte Zacher of Charlotte’s Cafe

The Duluth News Tribune has a nice remembrance of Charlotte Zacher, of Charlotte’s Cafe fame in Carlton.

I heard the news last night from my mom who got her first job there when she was 12 years old. When my brother and I would visit the cafe in the 70s and 80s she would always be gracious and tell us stories of our mom and it was like being received by royalty, because that’s how she carried herself, and I don’t just mean the fancy dresses that she wore to work every day around the diner. A true northern Minnesota original and a gem.

Charlotte’s Cafe and Carlton were featured in a segment on the TV show “Real People.” If anyone has (or can find) a clip of the segment I would love to see it and I know my mom would, too.

I remember bringing the old Zenith City Arts to Carlton for printing (early 1980s). While we waited, we would often go to Charlotte's for lunch. I asked how fresh the egg salad was and Charlotte showed me a couple of raw eggs and said "they came outta the chicken this morning." She then tossed them in a pot of boiling water.

A visitation for Zacher was rescheduled because of the weather. It will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Handevidt Funeral Home, 900 Washington Ave. in Cloquet. Services will follow at noon.

I remember seeing Charlotte riding her bike around Carlton. She was well into her 80s then, but she kept herself fit. She'd wear shorts (pink was her favorite and usual color) with nylons and, of course, her tall beehive hairdo.

I seldom had a chance to eat there as I always worked in Duluth and she was usually closed when I got there, but I was called to jury duty once and the County took us to Charlotte's for lunch. I remember good and filling food.
