Let’s make AltaVista a verb

What if, in an effort to show the world that we are sore losers, everyone in Duluth stops using Google and instead starts using the search engine AltaVista? I was able to find AltaVista quickly by doing a Google search and was pleased to find it still exists. I remember using it after my modem finished dialing up.

I tested it out by typing in “perfect duluth day” and found this site was the first result… below something called Benjamin Franklin Plumbing.

In your face, Google! The mayor can change the name of his kid to AltaVista, though his friends will just call him “Alt.” And, yes, I did steal this idea from a crappy weeknight sit-com.

I went to altavista.com. Then I visited lycos, magellen (no result), and infoseek (redirected to go.com which is powered by Yahoo!) because I didn't want to play favorites.

Benjamin Franklin Plumbing is a new pop-up business in Gary-New Duluth. The slogan says something like, "If it's not done on time you don't pay." Or something like that.

Found this earlier today from the Kansas City Star Google Will Hire Few, If Any Locals The article says they are planning on hiring one or two locals for the project the rest will be outside contractors. Elsewhere something said much of the network will be above ground on utility poles which surprised me. The main benefit to KC and to Duluth when/if it comes is in the expanded infrastructure. For example 130 public institutions, including schools will get a free 1 gigabit/sec connection.

I think a lot of people were upset about Duluth not being named the 1st place to get the Google Fiber to Home Network, and I was chief among them. I thought about boycotting Google, too, but have decided against it. Especially after they sent me a free set of Chromercize finger bands yesterday.

Above ground on utility poles? Interesting. May explain why Duluth did not get the Google project. Less potential ice buildup on utility lines in KC.

My issue is that you'd call Parks and Recreation a crappy sitcom. Don't know what else you're watching that's better...it's one of the best.
