Kozy Fire: Let’s Do Something Together

Kozy Fire

Can we put a fundraiser together between now and Sunday? Here is what Chester Creek Cafe will do:

1.) Set up a bank account to receive donations to Kozy residents.

2.) Take the 7pm to 10pm shift for a multiple site benefit – we clean out the “library” room for concert-style seating and prepare a “Spaghetti feed” type meal to be sold for (say) $15 to $20 — all of which will go to the Kozy fund. Any donations of clothing or other stuff will be available for Kozy residents. Kozy residents will also get a free meal that night.

3.) We will give any participating musicians and performers (Fire spinners?) a $15 gift certificate and a free meal.

Can other restaurants take the later shifts – like we all move down to the Brewhouse or Burrito Union at 10pm and then finish up at Luce at midnight?

Those places would offer a similar deal? What do you all think?
Restaurants? Musicians?

Let me know if this is doable.

That is a great idea Carla. I suggest a Dirty Horse set at Chester in the "library." If you book them, they will come.

Carla, you rock, what a great idea.

I was thinking of putting something together at Carmody...maybe Saturday?? Might be good to stagger this a little bit. I haven't talked to Eddie or Rick, but I plan to, this afternoon.

I would suggest setting something up on any other day than a Saturday, unless it was a afternoon thing. Just seeing as how Saturdays are pretty busy all around town.

There isn't a doubt in my mind that most bands/bars/venues in this town would gladly offer help for this cause. The Red Star is closed on Sundays unless a private party is booked, so that might be a "free" option to look into, giving the nature of the request.

As for setting up donations the Duluth Red Cross (218-722-0071) and Damiano have accounts already set up.

Why set up a bank account and not just donate the proceeds directly to the Red Cross. I am not trying to be contrarian I am genuinely curious. I support the idea and would definitely bring my family to a dinner fundraiser event for this.

I'd rather have Carla oversee the funds and delve them out to those in need instead of the Red Cross getting the money.

Folks, I stumbled on this thread via a News Tribune "comment". I've worked as an assistant rental manager at the Kozy Apartments the last four years. Thanks for your public spirit in producing, or contemplating, benefits for the now-homeless Kozy residents.

As of today, our current Manager Diane Shanks is facilitating, along with the Red Cross, shelter for just the next three days in local hotels ... After that, things are likely to get tragic in a hurry. If you possibly can, I hope you will call Diane or myself about the plan for distributing any proceeds from the various benefits mentioned. It's apt to be difficult to find many of the most needy after their hotel stay ends Fri. a.m., but Diane will know who and where they are. Thanks. Tom Cox 218-341-5690. Diane Shanks 218-522-7213

Great idea! How about Va Bene, Sir Ben's, Beaner's, Grandma's, Carmody, Mexico Lindo?

Please take my number if any help if needed in anyway. I can't sing, but I will be willing to do anything else that would be needed to help these people ... 213-5362.

This is why I love Duluth.

p.s. I am not going to set something up at Carmody Saturday. Maybe in the near future?? Is there such a thing as too much fundraising???

I will DJ somewhere, sometime, let me know. I also have a small to moderate amount of sound/lights that I'll put on the proverbial table, too.

@ Jimmy: how many kids were living in the complex?

Claire

If any kids need clothes, I am sure I can dig some up out of my kid's stash, please do let us know about that.

There was 2 children living at the Kozy apartments.
The Salvation Army and Red Cross will be able to replace there clothes, any clothing donation should be brought to one of the two.
Cooking utensils, tableware, blankets, common household items are in short supply.

Age/genders of the kids? I'd like to drop off a couple of toys.

One little boy is 3 years old and the other is a 14-year-old girl, the 14-year-old lived in the back of the building and her mom's belongings were unaffected by the fire.

Seven apartments in the front of the building were a complete loss and those tenants lost everything they owned. All of them were adults.

To all the good-hearted citizens on pdd, here's an update on how you can contribute to help the victims of the Kozy Apartments fire:

The Duluth News Tribune has published a piece detailing where to send $$$ donations or material goods:

Kozy Bar fire: How to help the victims

Also, John's Twin Ports Recycling will establish a fund of donated household electronics dedicated to the displaced Kozy tenants; working TV's, VCR's, radios, etc. that you have scheduled for recycling can be donated for the benefit of Kozy fire victims.

Please call John Curtis @ John's Twin Ports Recycling, 727-3185, to earmark a donation, or make a drop-off at his business, 614 1/2 E. First St. (in the alley below the Expert Tire building at 7th Ave. E. and First St.)

Thanks! Tom Cox, Ass't Manager, Kozy Apartments

...3.) We will give any participating musicians and performers (Fire spinners?) a $15 gift certificate and a free meal.

Um, just because nobody else has mentioned it ... I hope you're joking about the fire spinners at a fire-victims benefit.

I was just at the Salvation Army in the Friendly West End dropping off some stuff, it sounds like they are being *inundated* with donations! In fact, Mr. Claire donated some adult men's outerwear and they said they have plenty of clothes and may just sell the clothing at their store.

It's pretty inspiring, seeing the community come together like this to help these people out.

Re: Danny G post of Russ Stewart's face book page: I ring the bell for the Salvation Army. Not aware that they are anti-gay. I know they are some kind of Christian organization, which I honestly could care less about. Why? because I see them doing lots of good for people who need help and that is what I care about. I try to do due diligence on charities I contribute time or money to. Haven't found a perfect one yet or one that doesn't seem to have some rough edge I could do without. I am interested in results. I just donated my hair to Locks of Love and you know what they may have stolen my hair and sold it for profit instead of making a wig for a bald kid. At some point a little faith and trust has to come into play or you might as well never attempt to do anything helpful.

first, thank you for supporting my neighbors.
as much as i bitch about living downtown;
i believe in community.
and with that said
dont let 'someone else did it' stop you
from doing what you believe the right thing.
