Arrowhead Journey – Erik Simula – 1000 mile canoe journey

Arrowhead Journey 1000 Mile Canoe Journey

Arrowhead Journey 1000 Mile Canoe Journey

While on a hike this afternoon with my dog near Grand Marais I met Erik Simula on a unique canoeing journey.  Erik is a Duluth native and he is in the midst of a 1000 mile Minnesota canoe journey spread of the next 3 months. The journey started in Grand Portage on earth day April 22nd and Erik will paddle and portage his way from Grand Portage to Duluth to Grand Rapids to International Falls and back to Grand Portage in time for the 2009 annual rendezvous on August 7th. O’yea….BTW…  All in a canoe he made by hand and with his paddling partner dog Kitigan.  Click Here for the details of his trip on Erik Simua’s blog. Good Luck Erik!

See a couple more pictures I took during my brief conversation with him on the shores of Lake Superior as he landed on shore to camp due to the poor wind conditions and rough seas for paddling. Hopefully he will be in Duluth within the next week or so!! Here is the url to his web site: http://arrowheadjourney.wordpress.com/

In 2002 I worked with Erik at Grand Portage Nat'l Monument. He's an awesome canoe builder, and builds them right out in the open at the monument for visitors to come and watch (at least he did the summer I was there). Best of luck to him!

Bearskin Lodge is writing and maintaining the Arrowhead Journey blog.(http://arrowheadjourney.wodpress.com)

If you leave a blog message for Erik, he will eventually see it when he reaches a place with an internet connection. This is the best way to leave your good wishes and thoughts.

Bearskin Lodge can get a message to Erik through other means for something important. Give us a call or email us. We can get the information to him at some point.

Meet Erik at Indian Point Campground.

Info posted on his blog: http://arrowheadjourney.wordpress.com/

We've heard from a few people who wished they could have connected with Erik in Duluth. You still have a chance tonight. If you're near Duluth, join Erik tonight for a Fireside Chat at his campsite in the Indian Point Campground. Or listen to the discussion that will be broadcast on WTIP North Shore Radio at 7 PM tonight (Thursday). To reach the Indian Point Campground, head towards the lovely historic Willard Munger Inn at 7408 Grand Avenue in West Duluth. Go 3 blocks south of the Inn to find the campground. Erik will be at campsite #53. Find out just what happened to that pesky PFD zipper.

Greetings Erik from Troop 143, Duluth Georgia. We met you at Otterback lake on the Hunter's Island loop.We were with your friend and our guide, Fred Marks. We really enjoyed seeing your canoe and speaking with you. We finished the whole Hunter's Island loop (all 166 miles)just a few days after seeing you. The boys were really encouraged and inspired by your trek and wanted to everything they could to finish the whole Hunter's Island loop. Blessings on your trek.
