What's weird is that this popped up about a week ago in my Chicago backyard. I thought it was mushrooms at first. Like the other people on the link it was under the canopy of our tree in cedar mulch. Weird!

You can see this fairly often in deciduous woods-- I've seen it up in woods near Sugarloaf and over at Itasca State Park. Your photo is great!
