Your Geek Culture Update: The Wedding Edition
We are quickly moving into the wedding season and I stumbled on this recent article about this Star Wars themed wedding with all of the bridal party in full Star Wars regalia. It was even originally scheduled to be on May the Fourth. This alone made it worthy of my Geek King Seal of Approval.
The article made me wonder how wide spread this costumed, geek-themed wedding thing went which led me to the video below.
So, did you have or are you planning a geeky wedding? Have you attended a geeky wedding recently? I have to say that in 15 years of doing weddings I've never had anything remotely close to any of these, though I have considered studying up on medieval wedding customs and offering to do weddings at the Ren Faire and things like that as Friar Lawrence because with my hair who knows if I'm tonsured or not?
As always, please feel free to send me nominees for the Geek King Seal of Approval. This concludes this royal announcement.

when Tams and i were first considering doing the wedding thing (yes, ironic...you're still on the hook for that, btw), we were thinking of just eloping to las vegas and completely avoiding the drama and hassle that comes with trying to plan a wedding.
In doing so, we did some research and found that the Hilton does Star Trek themed weddings...
IMO, Star Trek weddings...MUCH geekier than Star Wars weddings.

No, my dear, Battlestar Galactica. Way more geeky.

After getting engaged, I had a conversation with my husband that went something like this.
Me: What about the Renaissance Festival? I think people can get married there.
Him: No.
Me: It would be fun. They have those big turkey legs and steins of beer.
Him: No.

Over ten years in the wedding entertainment industry, 500 or so weddings and I just have to say it has been a really dry spell for geeky weddings.
The closest ones are an outdoor enthusiast couple who had the groomsmen in matching flannel shirts and jeans. (the women wore dresses). Another honorable mention: One couple who used the Princess Bride theme from Mark Knopfler for their wedding march, but (besides me) there were no giants and no zix fingered men or R.O.U.S.'s either.
The best (although non-geeky) attempt at pop culture relevance was a bank holiday party with a "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Theme" that went pretty well, too. they didn't hand out a million, but several thousand, anyway. (But none for me I just did the sound and lights and got paid scale)
Personal note: Beverly I am so sorry for your loss, my wedding was a little too normal for my taste, too. AND if T and Z do decide to do a Battlestar Galactica, Trek or even Star Wars themed wedding, I want to be involved. My wheels are already turning.
