Hot Fun In The Summertime

paddling.jpg

So, my niece (11-going on 16) is coming to visit this weekend from the cities. She's been coming to Duluth and/or Washburn for the past 5 years for her annual escape from family and city living for a more relaxed and great outdoorish experience. My wife has a Canoe-Brule trip planned and I'm sure she can/has/will plan the rest of the weekend. For once, I'd like to contribute something to this little soiree and have some kind of influence in the proceedings. Unfortunately, I'm fresh out of ideas and am looking for a little help. Maybe something a little oddball but not too weird and distinctly Twin Ports/Western Lake Superior.

Dinner at the Anchor Bar in Superior. It is distinctively twin ports, and also surprisingly kid friendly.

Anchor Bar? I second that recommendation. Can I come, too? You can never go wrong with just hanging out at the beach at Park Point or Minnesota Point, either... Unless you're on the harbor side.

I heard the Brule is extremely low this summer. You might want to check it out.

If the Brule is too low you can always paddle part of the St. Louis. If you go above the dam off of 210 and enter Jay Cooke from the south there is a small put in spot not too far up, paddle up till you reach the rapids, last time I did it a nice leisurely paddle took me ~2-3 hours and there are spots you can stop and swim. Not much other boat traffic either, added bonus.
Tour the William Irving, that's kinda neat for a out of towner.
A trip around the Bayfield Peninsula is also pretty neat, going up along the shore.

Yes, dinner at the Anchor is always good and cheap too.
If you have a couple of canoes, paddle up the shore and pick agates on a nice calm day. You can access beaches you normally can't get to.
