Man Runs Over Dog and Sues Dog Owners

I heard about this this morning on MPR and could hardly believe it. This past January Jeffrey Ely hit a dog near Cloquet and kills it instantly. Now he is suing the owners for $1100 to cover damage to car and lost work time. The family is countersuing for $2400.

Um, ya know, crap like this happens, folks. Who's to blame? The driver, probably not. The family? Unlikely. The dog? Hardly. It seems to me when a pet is hit by a car either everyone is to blame or no one is to blame, unless there are extenuating circumstances, which I don't see here.

Anyone want to take a side in this?

Tristram Cary 1925-2008

cary_narrowweb__300x397,0.jpgTristram Cary, composer of music for many episodes of Doctor Who in the 60s and 70s, has passed away. He was regarded as a pioneer in electronic music. Sound the doo- WEEE-ooooooo in his honor.

Edit: Ron Grainer was the composer of the original theme song, not Tristram Cary as was erroneously reported in this obituary.

Lesson: Always check your sources.

Sound the dooo-WEEEE-oooo anyway.

Big tree kills little tree

BigTreeKillsLilTree.JPG

I'll be in mourning for a while over this one. I just planted my little Autumn Blaze Maple last fall. He had so much promise; so much life ahead of him. I never dreamed he'd be crushed by his big brother in a tragic accident.

is 84 the new 27?

03kurt.gif
Now that we can pry the gun from his cold, dead hand, I noticed that Charlton Heston died at the age of 84. Also dead at 84 in the past year, among other notables, were Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Norman Mailer. In recent memory, Pope John Paul II also cut down in the prime of his life at 84. Is this the new 27? If so, we've got to put up with a few more Rolling Stones records. Just an observation.
Oh, and Duluth, Duluthy-luth.

Matt Zaun

From Sarah Heimer...

"You may have heard about Matt Zaun's passing...but if you haven't, he died in his sleep on Saturday night in Eau Claire after going to a Black-eyed Snakes show. Anyway, he was and is one of my dearest friends and I am going back to Fargo..... this time to bury someone. I guess I'm asking you if you can find someone else to draw some funny pictures for this upcoming Transistor and please try to not run my comic again because that is ghetto and I just don't think I'll be able to pump one out this time. Maybe Sean Elmquist could come up with something. I found out about this Sunday night. What a shock. Thanks for understanding. --Sarah."

Hear more about Matt Zaun here and here and here.

If anyone knows how to get a hold of Sean Elmquist / Mic Trout, please have him email me.

Right Passenger-side Nut Job

AfternoonAdventure.JPG

There's nothing quite like the feeling of a wheel popping off your car when you're changing lanes on a highway.

The moral of the story is, when you get a brake job and start to hear a grinding noise a few days later, you might want to check to see if your mechanic tightened the lug nuts properly.

Anyway, this could be the end of a long and glorious run for the ol' Ford Taurus. We'll see.

Lace up your skates

Download file

As you all may know by now, the World of Wheels will be closing its doors on October 1st. Never again will I win a fruit roll up for my impressive ability to hula hoop on wheels. Never again will I get yelled at for skating into the limbo stick instead of under it. But enough about me, what is going to happen to everyone else??? You know, the regulars. What else are they going to do? I can't even fathom how frustating it will be to have all those hot roller moves stored up inside with no where to display them. That can't be healthy. I for one am heading over to the World of Wheels one last time this Wednesday. Hope to see you all there, say, around 7:30?

Another One Becomes Dust

I was somewhat comforted by c-freak's "Do Not Be Frightened of all the burning" post as I watched smoke billow up from my office window this morning. What with Fichtners and Loui's having burned down in the past year. But, to my GREAT relief, it was just True North Cedar burning to the ground (apparenly, wood burns) and NOT a pile of tourists in our beloved aquarium.

Fire

As the office continues to buzz, I realize how sometimes I am very thankful that this is the biggest news we usually get around here.

Uncle Loui's Burns!

Uncle Loui's Burns!

Circa 7pm today I noticed the smoke billowing out of Uncle Loui's Cafe on 4th Street, and luckily I had my trusty camera at my side. About a minute later the D.F.D. arrived, busted in though the glass and put out the smouldering blaze.

Guess we won't be having any gyro omelets anytime soon. Oh, well.

UPDATE: $75,000 in damages
