Bizarre Minnesota

andrew-bio_175.jpg

For what it is worth, Chef Andrew Zimmern, host of a very odd but sometimes entertaining TV/Cable program called Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel, will be doing an entire show dedicated to the freaks and their silverware from the fine state of Minnesota. Previous episodes have had him in Vietnam and Taiwan. Minnesota isn't that far from the epicurean palate, no?

The story line is simple, drop off a fearless eating machine someplace on the planet and he will eat anything. The grosser the food, the better the ratings is my guess. Never eaten Spider Ass fried in oil but hey, I may sometime soon.

30 minutes of AMAZING!!!

untitled.bmp

So it is pretty much agreed upon that the Anchor is awesome and can rarely be contended with. Well, I have to hand it to the Brewhouse as a worthy adversary. Some friends and I were in for lunch the other day and I had a jalepeno burger I am still tasting. This thing was insanely spicy. It took two mugs of their tap root beer and a coke to subside the burning. Way to go Brewhouse!! It took me 30 minutes to finish it and it was amazing.

This is what we call "Meatloaf on a Bun"

anchor6.jpg"One of the best places we've been in years," is how Jane and Michael Stern described the Anchor Bar on the Splendid Table today.

"A tattoo does not necessarily mean one is unkind," is one of my favorite quotes from the review.

The Kozy Bar will be the next to apply for outside drinking. If you didn't see this one coming, you're foolin' yourself.

Bong Water

bush_bong.jpg

I was at the Shack last night and they have a new menu, new smoking policy (Don't) and a new drinks menu - I opted for a chocolate martini but their featured drink was the "Bong Water".

Seeds and stems optional.

Burrito Union

Istarburritos.gif

I went to Burrito Union this last Friday with a friend and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Imperial Chicken and he ordered the Fat Capitalist. "It used to be called the Capitalist Pig," the person behind the counter said, "but some people were offended."

The decor was fun and eclectic. It reminded me of places I used to go to when I lived in the Evanston, Roger's Park area in Illinois. The mix and match chandeliers were a lot of fun and I appreciated the restoration of the orignal patterned ceiling. It sure doesn't look like the old co-op anymore.

The burritos themselves were huge and delicious. They cost a bit, $6.50 - $8.50 range, but you get a lot for that price. The burritos are also served with a complimentary side of chips.

Most intriguing to me is how the old Soviet Union is now nostalgic and can be used as a theme for a burrito restaurant of all things. Bozhe moi!

I give it four and a half red stars out of five.

So, how was it for you, comrade?

Mevdev's Review of the Zen House

sign.JPG

This place is in a weird location behind a gas station. It is at the corner of Maple Grove Rd and Haines Rd. It just opened up at the beginning of the month. I am a great lover of sushi, and looking at this menu there is much more than sushi.

There are not many tables, enough for two servers to keep busy. At the door I see plastic take-away packages of sushi. Kinda like the Byerly's sushi to go. I can't tell if they have meat in them, but at least two were vegetarian. More pics and review to follow.

It goes well...

You really should be eating here...

If you haven't already.

(I wish I had a photo to stick here, but alas...)

Tamara and I spend a bit of time here and we find more to like about the place each time we go. The gelatto is excellent, and for lunch/dinner, there is a plethora of freshly made sauces and pastas, cheeses, fresh veggies, breads and...if you're into it...meats. The food's to die for, and the price fits easily into pretty much any budget.

I'd suggest the Prosciutto pear and honey goat milk panini for starters...

Culvers

Ok. I don't know how they keep the custard frozen while still inside of the burger, but that is nasty.

I think the real failing of Culvers is that the sound of a buttered burger with frozen custard in it is just straight gross. I just want to point out that I am not an idiot, and there is no comma. Comma equals not nasty custard burger. I see no comma. Any english majors here? Communications?

Is there ever truth in advertising? Cause I'm sure a comma would have set them back, making those nasty frozen custard burgers a few more pennies more.

Hungry Cyclist Update.

Remember the Hungry Cyclist? Last summer he made his way through Duluth on his trek from New York City to Rio De Janeiro. He has completed his U.S.A. journey and is now headed into Mexico. You can read his latest update
here. I so want to go to Rio when he arrives.

W.F.C.

WFC

Hello kitties. The new Whole Foods Coop has been open for a couple of weeks now. What do you all think? I for one wish the aisles were a bit wider, I still find it hard to get around when it's busy. Also what's with all the surveillance cameras? I understand they need to protect their product but I've never seen so many cameras in a store that size before. You can watch for yourself here.

On the positive side. They carry my favorite bottled water now and the quart size of Silk Soy Creamer.

Discuss.

Oh.. So true...

This might offend some, but from a known population of meat eaters, I thought this was awesome...
