Recommend a Slide/Negative Scanner

Can anyone recommend a Mac compatible slide and 35mm negative scanner/converter? I’m not a professional, I just want to download all my old pre-digital camera photos. I’ve read customer reviews for products listed on Amazon, and now turn to a more trusted source of opinion … the readers of PDD. You don’t have to list any specs, but I would like to know what you like, and why. Thanks.

PDD Gift Guide 2009

The time to spend money we don’t really have is upon us. So why not give that money from the future to our friends and neighbors? With that sentiment in mind, the folks at Perfect Duluth Day have compiled a selection of locally produced goods and services to add to your shopping list.

The fabulous showcase below is by no means comprehensive, of course. We at PDD would like you to contribute to it through the comments. If you know of a local something special for that special someone, let it be known.

Skiing at Chester Bowl

The ski lottery was held a few weeks ago at Chester Bowl, but there are still some ski rental packages available. The Chester Bowl Improvement Club provides inexpensive season ski packages, including skis, poles, boots, helmets, and season ski passes, for those that want to take part in skiing, lessons or other activities at Chester Bowl. You also get a day pass to Spirit Mt. and Mont du Lac. Many parents call the Chester Bowl Ski Program the best deal in town, but for those unable to afford the already low prices, scholarships are available.
Check out the Chester Bowl website for more info.

Genghis Khan Returns To Duluth

Picture of Me and Recently-Captured Wife

Genghis Khan, native son of the steep lands we call Duluth, will return this weekend. Under the quarter moon, Genghis Khan and his fellow warriors of Chicago will ride to Duluth and celebrate with the tribe in which he was born. The journey will be long, and full of danger but luckily Genghis Khan’s war horse is equipped with a Compact Disc Player.  Therefore, Genghis Khan seeks the opinion of the people of his homeland in one question:

What are some good songs that sing of the hills of Duluth and it’s people?

With your answers, Genghis Khan will conduct several raids on neighboring tribes for the chants and harmonious chords you suggest to compile in a “mixed CD”. This artifact will serve to set the mood and empower the warriors of Chicago for their experience of the Northland, an experience for which they can never truly be prepared.

May your cities be reduced to ashes,

Genghis Khan

Duluth Thanksgiving Dinner Restaurant Rocommendations

What’s a good place to eat dinner on Thanksgiving day in Duluth?

(Looking for a restaurant recommendation, not the suggestion to go to your grandmother’s house!)

Duluth Halloween 2009 Party Guide

Howie Mandell (from St. Elsewhere)
Howie Mandell (from St. Elsewhere), as seen at RT Quinlan’s on Halloween of 2008

Once again, Superior Street is coming out in full-force this Halloween night, and will undoubtedly be lined with zombies, sluts, slutty zombies, and probably even a Balloon Boy or two. Every bar in town has a “Halloween bash” and costume contest, of course. But here are a few events I’m aware of that sound like they’ll rise considerably above the average Halloween party, which is something when you consider that even the average Halloween party is pretty choice.

Feel free to leave any events I’ve missed in the comments, and I’ll add them to the list. They don’t have to be in Downtown Duluth or even in Duluth at all for that matter.

Most of all, have fun, be safe, and let’s all hope the lights don’t go out again this year.

Oct 24 Int’l Day of Climate Action

Last year, NASA’s James Hansen issued a devastating report on climate change, concluding that any amount of CO2 in the atmosphere above 350 parts per million (ppm) is not compatible “with a planet upon which civilization developed, or to which life on Earth has adapted.” Problem is, we’re already at 389ppm and rising.

“…And on the 7th Day, God Rocked” on Netflix

bc_7godrock

Beginning today, the 4-Track Films mockumentary “…And on the 7th Day, God Rocked” is available on Netflix, for any homebodies or expatriates who didn’t get a chance to see it at any of the local screenings or on a purchased DVD. The movie about a Christian battle of the bands was shot in Duluth and features a lot of local talent.

I’ve seen it. You should put it in your queue. It’s funny.
