In the past, the swearing in ceremonies were a very small part of the State of the City activities. This year we’ve decided to try something different in order to give City Councilors their own event, allowing the newly elected councilors to be the focus of that event. So, next Monday, I will have a very short outdoor inauguration at noon at City Hall. That evening, the council inauguration will be held at 6pm at Clyde Iron, the ceremony starting at 6:30. As a reminder, the councilors being sworn-in include Jay Folse, Sharla Gardner, Jennifer Julsrud, Garry Krause, Linda Krug, and Emily Larson.

At 7pm there will be a reception featuring live music by Teague Alexy and the Boomchucks. All these events are free and open to the public – we’d love to see you there!

The recent post on this site promoting Occupy Duluth appears to not be from anyone representing the actual persons organizing on the ground/in-person as Occupy Duluth (I say it in such a convoluted fashion because I don’t like giving the impression there is a membership, whoever wants to be part of Occupy Duluth is).

The link given for Facebook is to a group run by a random guy that doesn’t so much as come to our general assembly meetings (so far as I know, no-one I know has even met him in-person).

I wouldn’t have a problem with him running and promoting a group supporting Occupy Duluth if he stated his position and that he isn’t involved with the group in-person/on the ground but since he seems to be merely pretending to represent us without offering further info it’s hard to believe this action is well-intended and meant to help.

You can find more infos about the General Assembly holding/in-person action organizing Occupy Duluth group at OccupyDuluth.org as well as facebook.com/OccupyTwinPorts
and facebook.com/groups/ODsupporters — however this one keeps repeatedly being wiped of posts by some kind of nefarious ne’er-do-wells (I hesitate to say hackers b/c I don’t know how they are doing it), and will likely be replaced soon.

Also note — this post is an autonomous action by me and doesn’t represent the opinion of all the other awesome folks working under the Occupy Duluth banner.

Solidarity!

The DNT ran a story today detailing a new mixed-use residential/commercial plan for the site of the former Woodland Middle School. The developer bought the site from the school district in September. You may be familiar with the developer’s other projects like Boulder Ridge and Campus Park.

Currently the plan is to reuse the school building itself, and add one-to-three additional buildings. The student-focused housing would have 300 beds in mainly four bedroom units. If demand is high enough this could be increased to 1,000 beds. The retail aspect of the new development would include restaurants. The DNT story named Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods as some potential additions. A hotel is also being considered.

Sounds like the new development would open in Fall 2013 or 2014.

The full story can be found here.

What do you think about this plan? Is it a good idea? If not what would you propose? Personally, I think no matter where students go in high concentrations that residences in the same area will take a “not in my backyard” attitude. This development may not solve all the student housing issues, but it will alleviate it to some degree, and create jobs.

On the retail side what would you like to see at the site? A friend of mine would really like to see a Chipotle, Panera, or faster food pasta place. I would love to see more locally owned restaurants go in. Duluth Grill part 2?

Out-of-town element and notorious volunteer, Diane Emerson, reacts to Duluth Police Chief Gordon Ramsay’s reference to her at yesterday’s press conference about Occupy Duluth. She was so stunned she almost spilled her herbal tea on her Nonviolent Communication handbook!

At a Thursday press conference, Duluth Police Chief Gordon Ramsay warned of “more anarchists and more out of town people” moving in to the Occupy Duluth encampment at the Civic Center.

Loaves & Fishes Community has been monitoring this situation closely, and is shocked to discover one such out-of-town anarchist right in our dining room! In fact, Diane Emerson, past president of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society and traveling global volunteer, appears to be a ringleader of the insurgent Occupy Duluth movement. She has been observed recording the minutes of General Assemblies and routinely tidying up the Occupy Duluth camp and surrounding area.

Emerson recently learned that she was an anarchist after reading the definition, and is as surprised as anyone. Apparently Emerson believes in taking responsibility for herself and her community and working with others in a way that is both collaborative and democratic. An MBA, Emerson has recently been overheard speaking out against the vast accumulation of wealth by billionaires and the need for more sharing and less greed.

Loaves & Fishes urges calm. Emerson is soon moving on to a new volunteer project on the West Coast, once again ensuring the safety of the Duluth community.

On Perfect Duluth Day, I found a post by City Councilor-elect Jennifer Julsrud, titled “Duluth’s Plumbing Needs Big Fix,” regarding Duluth’s aging water infrastructure. Accompanied by a short YouTube video (serious people talking seriously about water, serious music playing in the background), the post listed a series of upcoming community meetings that were to be held on the subject.

Naturally, this irritated me greatly. As far as I was concerned, this was just the latest example of Duluth’s tendency to be serious one minute about issues that actually need attention, and the next minute to stampede giddily off in pursuit of unneeded, but very expensive, luxuries that we want RIGHT NOW—as if the money we spend on the luxuries has no relation at all to the money we need for necessities.

To illustrate this point, I made three comments on the post. They read as follows:

COMMENT #1: Let’s sell the NorShor Theatre for a few million. That should cover it.

COMMENT #2: I know, I know. I’m just kidding. Let’s jack up water rates instead.

COMMENT #3: And now you can skip all the meetings.

Satisfied that I had made my views known in a way that satisfied my inherent need for sarcasm, I put the matter behind me and went to bed.

The next day, however, as I scrolled through PDD, I was surprised to find that the water utility post had no comments attached to it. Puzzled, I emailed the PDD moderators to ask what had happened. I was thus informed that my comments no longer existed because the author of the post, City Councilor-elect Jennifer Julsrud, had flagged them as spam and removed them.

I blew a gasket. Getting censored by a government official was bad enough, but to be flagged as spam enraged me. My comments may not have been overflowing with niceness, but they made a valid point, and nobody who has read anything I have written on PDD and elsewhere would be the slightest bit surprised by them. It’s my style, dude. You can’t censor people based on their style.

Your thoughts?
