I’m not sure if “Drunken Photos from the 1990s” is meant to be a series or not, but I happened to come across two images in my attic that fit the category and raised some questions I thought the Internet could answer.

The photo above is from a house party in the Central Hillside. It’s dated March 12, 1994. I know that it involves some kind of trick, but I can’t remember what the trick is. If memory serves me correctly, the woman on the couch has a slice of bread on her stomach. The guy standing over her burns a lighter under a shot glass or something, and then puts the shot glass over the bread and her stomach skin gets sucked up into the glass or something like that. Has anyone heard of this? It’s been 18 years, so I’ve kind of forgot.

I don’t know who these guys are, but I remember taking the above photograph at the Bob Dylan and Paul Simon concert at Bayfront Park on July 3, 1999. I just felt the need to capture the sheer joy on their faces as they chugged Jägermeister and Miller High Life at that awesome, muddy concert.

These days I wonder if the two clowns in this pic, and the gal peering over them for that matter, are still around town. Perhaps they are upstanding members of society and will be embarrassed by this. Or maybe they’ll be glad to relive the moment. Maybe we’ll find out.

Anyone can submit to this exhibit!

Yes, the 4x v2.0 is here! Last year we had over 130 entries into this unique and wonderful exhibit open to all! Submissions for the 4x need to be delivered or postmarked by Jan. 31 in order to be eligible. Submitted prints have to follow one main rule: one side must be 4 inches! Let’s see how creative you can get!

Submissions must follow a few simple guidelines:

1) Only photographic prints may be submitted, and one side must be 4 inches long.

2) Each print must be flush mounted (mount is same size as print, no extra) on some kind of stiff material (foam core or matt board works just fine.)

3) The total perimeter (or circumference) of the print cannot exceed 60 inches (distance all the way around.)

4) The print must not have been submitted into any past 4x exhibit through the DPI.

5) Please put your name and contact information on the back of each submission.

6) Include a stamped, self addressed envelope if you would like your submissions returned via snail-mail.

To submit, bring your prints to the DPI at 405 E. Superior St. (check the website schedule for hours of operation), or call Brian at 218.393.2468 to schedule a time to drop them off or for a mailing address.

That’s me on the left in my Minnesota Twins championship T-shirt, proudly raising a bag full of what have got to be bear claws. PDD co-founder Barrett Chase is on the right. In the middle, grabbing his junk, is Bob Schulte.

For most of its existence, and at the time of the photo above, House of Donuts was located just east of where the Whole Foods Co-op is now, at 624 E. Fourth St. Ronald and Michele Carter were the owners.

It opened in the mid-1970s at 1231 E. Fourth St., and moved to the 624 location around 1983. The Shanty Bottle Shop took over the 1231 location and remains there today. Before the HOD moved to 624 the Wash-n-Dry Laundromat was there.

There is a Facebook page called “We will never forget you HOD (House of Donuts)” that is scheduled to be archived. Here are some photos from it:

If you’re a fan of daring feats of winter bravery or even just swanky sweaters, you’ll love this stuff. This is a work in progress, Peter Spooner from the Tweed sorted and scanned photos from various sources and posted them, we’re hoping that people continue to contribute and add any info they might have about the photos.

Oh, and if you’re a fan of the modern-day Chester Bowl ski program, don’t miss the wine-beer-pizza tasting and silent auction on Saturday, November 12th, 6-9 PM, Midi Restaurant.
