Now MPR asks, “What do artists owe you?”

I don’t know if I was being cheap or just avoiding my hoarding instincts, but I regret not coughing up $8 for this Guy Lombardo record at the Wallace Henkins Estate Sale in May. It appears to be a live recording on Duluth station WEBC from Oct. 14, 1948 — I’m not sure. It was an over-sized record, and I wasn’t sure if it would fit on my turntable. So, who picked it up and how long until it’s shared on the Internet?

Among the new inductees to the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame is Cloquet accordionist Lorren Lindevig, known for his playing with the Westernaires and the Chmielewski Funtime Band.

Trampled by Turtles will be on a European tour during the first week of June this year, a little less than two weeks after Low returns from its European tour. Charlie Parr makes his trip overseas in between, and actually overlaps the TBT tour.

So, believe it or not, if you are in London on June 5 you have the option of seeing two Duluth acts play. Charlie Parr will be at a pub called the Slaughtered Lamb, while TBT will be one mile away at a club called Scala.

“Is that right?” Parr laughs upon hearing the news. “That’s hilarious. I love it. I’ll have to call them. We could have tea together!”

Hannah and Curren, two musicians who have benefited from the Music Resource Center, were on The PlayList last week — young people doing their thing and being articulate and cool — what more can we ask for?

This recently unearthed clip from KDLH-TV’s Newschannel 3 This Morning, features the Hospital People performing the song “Crash” in support of their April 2003 Geek Prom gig at the NorShor Threatre.

There is nothing quite like rawking and spaz dancing at 6 a.m. Maybe that’s why the video is so faded.

I participate in a number of drum circles with a dear friend. I had discussed making a CD of some of our sessions for her to send to her sister. My friend has fallen ill, so now time seems to be of the essence.

I have recorded about two hours of our drum circles and would like to edit and clean them up and put them on a CD for her and her family. I tried to use a few mixing programs, but I haven’t the time, patience or knowledge to figure it out. I do know when it is good to seek the help of someone who knows what they are doing though, and this is the time. So, is there someone out there who can help me?

I have about two hours of recordings. I have selected the places I’d like to split it into tracks. I need something really simple like fade in and fade out, and possibly some help bringing down some sounds that are too loud on a few of the recordings (zills). It doesn’t have to be great, because lord knows we aren’t great drummers, but I’d like it to sound as good as is reasonably possible. I expect to make about 10 copies for family and friends, and none will be sold.

Is there someone out there who can help me with this project? I am more than willing to pay for the service, but don’t know what to expect or where to start.

Music Resource Center student Curren Effinger wrote, recorded, filmed, and edited this video for his song “Little Drum” this spring with help from students at the UMD Participatory Media Lab.  It was a huge job, but tons of fun and we’re excited to share it with you.

Shortly before the performance, we visited Gabriel’s Bookstore — I’m guessing that this is some kind of volunteer operation, because the hours are a little uneven (we only get up to Lakeside on Saturdays, and Saturdays are hit and miss in terms if being open…) — can someone fill me in on the nature of this shop?  Saturday was a “bag sale day” — a stack of books we might not have bought (for example, some books on Klingon culture) came home with some real winners (some pulp-era fiction by Manly Wade Wellman, for example, as well as a hardcover about best practices for nonprofit boards that I will be reading for Wildwoods).  If I can come to understand this shop better, I will make it a more regular part of my reading life.

(We were in Lakeside to watch the Lester River overflow its banks… we missed the kayak race that was less than a quarter mile from where we were…  Did anyone catch it?)

Kate and I started the day with Free Comic Book Day at Rogue Robot & Collector’s Connection – FOX21 was part of these event at Rogue Robot.  Free Comic Book Day celebrates the medium of comics for all ages, and among the comics I grabbed were Kaboom’s Studios’ Sampler with Herobear and the Kid, the Scratch9 Sampler, and Hermes’ Press’ Buck Rogers sampler.  I extract a page below.

Free Comic Book Day should be on everyone’s calendar for next year.  All in all, a great day for Nerds.

Tomorrow, I will try to be Cool instead of Nerd.  Emily Haavik will be playing Homegrown at Sacred Heart.  Last year, Paul Lundgren and I listened to Emily at Chester Creek Cafe from outside the venue — listening through the window while a capacity crowd jammed the space.  Tomorrow, awesomeness.
