Photos Wanted! »

LakeVoice News is looking for recent photos from around the Duluth area that we can showcase in our weekly news publication. They can be of anyone or anything, but all we ask is that it is from the area. We also ask that you write a short caption for the photo that explains where the picture was taken, who is in the picture, what is going on in the picture and who took the photo.

To submit your photos you can email them to lakevoicenews @ gmail.com and an editor will get back to you as soon as possible if we decide to publish it.

Not lady’s night at the Duluth Puttin’ Hut »

YOUTUBE

Duluth gets a shout out of sorts in this PlayStation ad. I thought they said Duluth Mutton Hut at first, which sounded appealing, but I’m pretty sure it’s puttin.

I don’t think there is a puttin’ hut either, sadly.

How many Minnesota artists are there? »

The Minnesota State Arts Board is conducting a census to find out just how many Minnesotans are “engaged in creative expression.”

Starting last week, the state agency has been encouraging people to fill out an online survey indicating whether they are an artist, work in the arts, or help facilitate or promote creative expression. The state legislature directed the State Arts Board and the state’s eleven regional arts councils to conduct the census to help measure the influence of arts in the state.

Brian Strub, communications & government relations director with the MN State Arts Board, explains the parameters this way:

We are asking participation from anyone state wide who, professionally or personally, sings, acts, dances, writes, draws, paints, sculpts, illustrates, photographs, films, knits, weaves, directs, plays an instrument, composes, shares stories, designs, or any other form of creative expression; and any agency, business, facility, or organization that produces, presents, or promotes creative expression. I’ve been telling people, “If you’re creative, be proud. Be counted.”

Strub says the MN Arts Count will continue through the end of April. You can participate in the survey here.

Duluth: The Real Hockey Town USA? »

This will only be of interest to the biggest Duluth-o-philes, Twitter nerds (like me) and possibly hockey fanatics.

Last night for about 10-15 minutes Duluth East was trending on Twitter in the United States. This means that there was an enormous amount of “chatter” about Duluth East’s victory over Edina in the MN State High School League AA Hockey Semi-Finals.

Duluth Media Boners »

While I was really rooting for the “Paste Headline Here” whoopsie by the DNT, I think the Transistor gets the gold cup for its summary of today’s Polar Plunge.

Reference to Duluth in Popular Literature »

“Amanda drove and let Jenny doze in the front seat while Lucy slept in back.  They woke just south of Duluth.  They spent the night in a little town called Superior.  In the morning they stopped at the grocery store in Duluth to stock up for the week.”                   — (Chapter 17)

“The road they traveled from Duluth had stretched out ruler-straight for miles, cutting farm fields in half, as pastures fell away toward island lakes.  Dark clouds gathered in the western sky as they entered the great expanses of forest in Wisconsin.”                  –(Chapter 21)

from LUCY (A Novel) by Laurence Gonzales  (2010)

“When all is said and done, more is said than done.” – Alan Page »

Sure the Packers won (another) super bowl victory tonight. Congratulations, I guess. But hey, for those of us that are Vikings fans, we may not have a gillion Lombardi trophies like Green Bay does, (we don’t have one even, Packer fans will be sure to tell you), but we’ve got something even better than the Packers:

A state supreme court justice. SO there.

Here’s MN Supreme Court Justice and former Viking great Alan Page talking about education, transcending politics, and the importance of strong families last week on MSNBC

Free Rent for a Year in Duluth: Go Downtown, Grow Downtown »

Go Downtown. Grow Downtown

The Greater Downtown Duluth Council and a bunch of other organizations are offering free rent for a year plus free advertising, business planning and technical support for two businesses in Downtown Duluth. Click the picture for contest details.

One of my obsessive Duluth-oriented twitter feeds led me to this on the Star Tribune website. I couldn’t find mention of it in the online Duluth News Tribune, but they are a sponsor so I’m sure it will get in there sometime, (unless maybe they’re hoping to bring in outside ideas first).

Free rent for a year? And who said this town wasn’t business friendly. I’m all for revitalization in Downtown Duluth. I hope it works.

After a great showing in the still ongoing Google fiber campaign Duluth has another chance to “Cheer” for ourselves in the “We Hear You America” contest from Reader’s Digest.

We Hear You America - Reader's Digest

I guess the contest has been running for a few months, but I’m not much of a Reader’s Digest Reader so I just found out about it yesterday. I “cheered” and I encourage other PDDers to play along. Yeah, I’d love for us to get the $5 million bucks or whatever it is, but I also like the idea of people mobilizing to be positive about our town. It has been fun to do with Google Fiber and this should be no different. (more…)

Fond Du Lac Chairwoman Karen Diver
and President Barack Obama »

Karen Diver seated next to President Obama at the 2nd White House Tribal Nations Conference in December. You can read about it in this months’s Fond Du Lac Band Tribal newspaper.

This story also made the DNT but somehow it only rated a “Faces and Names” mention in the DNT, below Shania Twain, Jermaine Jackson and Stephen Baldwin in the online version that I called up today. Who knows? Maybe they did another story somewhere but I missed it.

Duluth News Tribune: Online vs. Paper »

I am looking for some advice regarding the Duluth New Tribune.  I recently stopped my paper subscription and am now reading the news online.

My problem is the online edition seems very hard to navigate.  I feel that not all the daily stories are available online, or they may be hidden underneath one of the many tabs.   (I emailed the News Tribune about this and was told that all stories printed in the paper copy are available online but I recently compared them and did not find this true.)

I have also noticed that the stories are displayed in a list, with no separation between “today’s news” and other recent stories.  This has a tiring effect on my mind since I am seeing the same stories for days.

Can anyone recommend a good way to read online so the same information is gleaned, or is this not possible?  I may go back to the paper edition.

City of Duluth Quarterly »

Duluthians should find the first issue of City of Duluth Quarterly in their mailboxes today, Dec. 10. It’s part of Mayor Don Ness’ plan to improve city communications. The magazine is produced by city staff and New Ventures Publishing Corp.

New Ventures is owned by former Duluth News Tribune publisher Marti Buscaglia and also publishes Duluth-Superior Magazine.

Upset Duluth (Continued) »

I was reading the DNT this morning and had to chuckle when I was reminded of Lundgren’s September post about upset Duluth resident photos showing up in the DNT on an approximately monthly basis. I am convinced of the conspiracy now. Who at the DNT is trying to spread negativity on the front pages?

2010 Christmas City of the North Parade »

The Christmas City of the North Parade has its own website now at christmascityparade.com. This year’s parade will be on Friday, Nov. 19, at 6:20 p.m. and should end around 8 p.m.

The website seems to be missing the most important thing, however. I can’t find Merv Griffin’s “Christmas City” song on it anywhere. So here it is.

Secretary Oberstar? »

From Star Tribune/Hot Dish Politics:

[T]he president called at breakfast Wednesday morning … Staffers who were gathered with Oberstar at the Duluth Holiday Inn heard Oberstar tell Obama, “Mr. President, I want you to know that while my service in Congress has ended, my commitment to public service has not, and I’m ready to assist your administration in any way.”

To which, the president reportedly replied, “Let’s let the dust settle and talk again.”

The Wails of November »

Last night at the Brewhouse I mentioned to Cody, the guy next to me at the bar, that I liked the comic on the cover of this week’s Transistor, even though I have to admit that I don’t understand it.

He told me he understands it perfectly, then started talking about fractals and how the comic is referring to a famous Japanese picture and so on. Maybe it was the Starfire Ale, or maybe I’m just stupid, but no matter how hard Cody tried, he couldn’t get me to understand this comic.

Obviously there’s a play on the phrase “Gales of November” going on. There seems to be some roller derby girls surfing. That’s about all I can make of it.

Can anyone explain this comic in a way that I’ll understand?

Google map update »

I just noticed that a new satellite image of my neighborhood is on google maps. The area used to be fuzzy and green; it was hard to see the houses clearly. Now we can tell that two people were getting out of my minivan when the image of my house was taken. It was taken sometime this summer.

The photo posted here is the Hartley Nature Center parking lot, not far away. The screen-grab doesn’t look as clear as it does originally. Maybe your house has been updated, too?
