The Lake Superior Libraries Symposium is placing a call for proposals with local librarians, teachers, IT professionals and community members to participate in our inaugural conference to be held on Friday, June 1, 2012 at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College Conference Center.

We are actively seeking presenters on Leadership, Teaching & Learning, and Technology; if you believe you can share a viable program, message, workflow, idea, demonstration, or other experience in a breakout/classroom format, then we encourage you to submit here.

Presentations should be 45 minutes in length including Q&A. The Symposium will provide audio visual support. Presenters will be thanked for their service and sharing, and will also be able to go to the front of the buffet line for Deluxe Taco Bar. Call for Proposals closes on February 24th, with presentation schedule released in mid-March.

The Lake Superior Libraries Symposium is a conference developed by local librarians from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Our goal is to develop and foster an enhanced network of skills, programs, and literacy types that will benefit the libraries of Northern Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota, and their respective communities. Recognizing the limitations of budgets and time available to most library staffs, the Lake Superior Libraries Symposium is designed to be a low-cost, centrally located event to maximize our reach. This inaugural conference will be held on Friday, June 1st at WITC-Superior with minimal costs for attendance.

Advertised as “The Picture Every Christian Ought to See,” this immediate box office smash and silent masterpiece follows a Palestinian Jew who battles against the tyranny of the Roman empire. This film had an “extra” cast like no other. Many Hollywood stars showed up on set to watch the shooting and were pressed into service as extras, especially in the chariot race. In addition, many who would later become Hollywood’s top stars, but who were at the time just struggling actors, were also in the crowd scenes as extras. Among well-known and soon-to-be-well-known names “working” in the film were , Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable and many others. (Source: IMDb.com)

In addition to being a Fulbright Scholar, he is part of a small number of artists in the world of the theater organ ever to have achieved a Doctoral degree in music, and the first to have ever done so with a degree in Organ Performance (DMusA U of M, 2008). Widely known for his scholarship with Silent Film, he has already traveled and performed extensively in both the United States and abroad.

Prøve Gallery, Duluth, Minnesota’s independent and artist run contemporary gallery is proud to announce “Strange Objects,” opening March 9, 2012. Strange Objects will showcase pieces that are the product of performance, a performance process/action, or an unusual, unnatural, and intense process. The type or style of art is not important, but the reason for the object’s existence is.

Show Description: “Strange Objects” will explore what is physically left over from a piece of art that utilizes some kind of action, process, or performance. The piece of art cannot be the main focus of the original work but must be the product of the original act. An example would be the Han dynasty urn from AI Weiwei’s “Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn.” Prøve seeks to display the “left overs” of the act along with a description of the original act as a way for the art community to understand the importance and vitality of performance in contemporary art.

Prøve Gallery: Prøve Gallery is a cultural organization dedicated to the role of art exhibition as a conduit of powerful ideas and diverse viewpoints. Our mission is to foster a greater appreciation of the contemporary arts, to bridge cultures, create and expand community, and provide cultural exchange, networking opportunities and educational outreach through regular interaction with the contemporary arts. It is the goal of PRØVE Gallery to present monthly gallery shows, collaborate with like-minded artists and arts organizations, and provide an arts retail environment.

It’s really exciting to see this kind of event assembled. Kudos to all involved. If winter is the off-season for the Duluth arts and culture scene, you’d never know it by all the things happening in our community these days. Here’s a link to my review of the event last night and the writers who alternately made us laugh or think more deeply about the meanings of our lives, sometimes at the same time.
