Music and miniatures combine again for Diorama-rama at Sacred Heart. Don your best Renaissance garb for a Valentines Madrigal Dinner which will also take place Saturday night.

Saturday, Feb. 11
Martin Zellar plays a CD release show at Luce with Charlie Parr opening. Take your pick of Valentine’s Day related events to get you in the mood to either love or love to hate the upcoming holiday, starting with a special match between the Harbor City Roller Dames and the Chippewa Valley Roller Girls in a cupid scuffle. Enjoy a romantic dinner at Glensheen after taking a tour of the historic site. Lastly, take in some art based on love, a puppet show, lasers, and more at Love at the Snoodle.

Presentations should be 45 minutes in length including Q&A. The Symposium will provide audio visual support. Presenters will be thanked for their service and sharing, and will also be able to go to the front of the buffet line for Deluxe Taco Bar.  Call for Proposals closes on February 24th, with presentation schedule released in mid-March.

The Lake Superior Libraries Symposium is a conference developed by local librarians from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Our goal is to develop and foster an enhanced network of skills, programs, and literacy types that will benefit the libraries of Northern Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota, and their respective communities. Recognizing the limitations of budgets and time available to most library staffs, the Lake Superior Libraries Symposium is designed to be a low-cost, centrally located event to maximize our reach. This inaugural conference will be held on Friday, June 1st at WITC-Superior with minimal costs for attendance.

Save the date for one of four upcoming bicycle/pedestrian meetings in Duluth. Each two-hour meeting starts promptly at 6 p.m.

These meetings will be hosted by the Healthy Duluth Area Coalition, and will cover a number of ongoing bike and pedestrian projects happening in Duluth. If you attend, you will learn more about these projects, have an opportunity to provide input, and learn how you can help make walking and bicycling safer in Duluth. Each meeting will follow the same format, so feel free to attend whichever one fits best within your schedule.

Projects that will discussed include…

• Results from the 2010 Duluth Bicycle Assessment
• City of Duluth Trails and Bikeways Master Plan
• Lakewalk to Munger “Cross-City Trail”
• The Safe and Walkable Hillside community group
• Redesign studies of 6th Avenue East
• Lincoln Park/Western Middle School pedestrian studies
• Higher Education Small Area Plan
• Duluth citywide sidewalk study
• COGG’s “Duluth Traverse” citywide mt. bike trail
• Possibility of a bike share program in Duluth
• Possibility of a mid-hill bike lane through the hillside

Who knew

Steven Ball occupies a rather unique place in both the worlds of the organ and carillon. In addition to being a Fulbright Scholar, he is part of a small number of artists in the world of the theater organ ever to have achieved a Doctoral degree in music, and the first to have ever done so with a degree in Organ Performance (DMusA U of M, 2008). Widely known for his scholarship with Silent Film, he has already traveled and performed extensively in both the United States and abroad.

Prøve Gallery, Duluth, Minnesota’s independent and artist run contemporary gallery is proud to announce “Strange Objects,” opening March 9, 2012. Strange Objects will showcase pieces that are the product of performance, a performance process/action, or an unusual, unnatural, and intense process. The type or style of art is not important, but the reason for the object’s existence is.

Show Description: “Strange Objects” will explore what is physically left over from a piece of art that utilizes some kind of action, process, or performance. The piece of art cannot be the main focus of the original work but must be the product of the original act. An example would be the Han dynasty urn from AI Weiwei’s “Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn.” Prøve seeks to display the “left overs” of the act along with a description of the original act as a way for the art community to understand the importance and vitality of performance in contemporary art.

Prøve Gallery: Prøve Gallery is a cultural organization dedicated to the role of art exhibition as a conduit of powerful ideas and diverse viewpoints. Our mission is to foster a greater appreciation of the contemporary arts, to bridge cultures, create and expand community, and provide cultural exchange, networking opportunities and educational outreach through regular interaction with the contemporary arts. It is the goal of PRØVE Gallery to present monthly gallery shows, collaborate with like-minded artists and arts organizations, and provide an arts retail environment.

Work Guidelines:
• Any form and style of art is acceptable. A video simply documenting the performance is not, however.
• Work cannot exceed 8’ wide and deep, and 10’ tall.
• Work hung on the wall cannot exceed 10’ tall. These works should also be supported by conventional means and must be able to be supported by a standard residential wall.
• Gallery staff will be installing all pieces.
• Work MUST be complete and ready for installation at the time of submission.
• Work hung from ceiling cannot exceed 50 pounds.
• Work displayed on the floor must be free standing and cannot be attached to the floor.
All application materials must be submitted in English. We provide publicity, exhibition invitations, mailings, and an opening reception. We do not provide insurance coverage for work exhibited at Prøve Gallery. Prøve Gallery claims a 40% commission from all work sold while at Prøve Gallery. All work is shown at the artist’s own risk. All work shipped to Prøve Gallery must have paid return shipping.
