One Book, One Community … One Local Author

Visit Duluth Public Library’s One Book, One Community page and cast your vote for a book to be selected for this reading program. My suggestion: Support, Linda Grover’s The Dance Boots. Grover is the only local author on the shortlist, and this award-winning set of stories is perfect for this honor. (You might also check out Grover’s hot-of-the-press novel The Road Back to Sweetgrass.)

Half Super – teaser trailer

In honor of Labor Day, 4 Track Films would like to share with you its three-year labor of love — the teaser trailer for the new film Half Super. It’s a tale of love, loss and superheroes. It stars Abraham Curran and Tierney Michon and was written and directed by yours truly, Jason Page.

This is just the first taste. Each month for the next four months we will be releasing additional videos as we build to our February 2015 premiere. Stay tuned for more, and please help us raise awareness by passing on the link. Cheers!

Ark of the Anthropocene is coming to Duluth and needs support!

Ark-of-the-Anthropocene-DNT-photoMinneapolis-based artist and musician Sean Connaughty has done many wonderful and interesting things. Among them are a series of self contained ceramic biospheres that he sculpts, fills with plant life, and then submerges in waterways to become free floating universes. He wires them with cameras so viewers can hit his website and see what is going on inside. Now he has taken on his biggest version of the project yet, a massive concrete ‘Ark’ biosphere which will be submerged in Lake Superior near the Aquarium. The image is of the Ark being hoisted in place for the Northern Spark Festival in June at the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis.

New Duluth Film Meetup Group

I’m a filmmaker new to Duluth. I started a new Meetup so I could wrangle all the film enthusiasts in the area into one location. The group covers people interested in making films and those who just enjoy watching them. Only a day old and already growing, with our first meeting coming up Sept. 4. Hope to see you there!

Duluth needs a mascot

My daughter is in Japan this week with the Duluth Sister City Exchange. One of the chaperones sent this picture from their meeting with the mayor today, along with a description of “Isumi,” the Ohara Isumi City mascot.

“Her orange head is an Asian Pear. Her headband features the city flower on one side and a Spiny Lobster on the other. The blue curl on her forehead is a wave representing the Pacific Ocean and the symbol on her chest is the official Isumi symbol. She also holds a stalk of rice for the extensive rice farming in the region.”

Has there ever been a Duluth mascot? I think I might draw up a couple ideas for one. A seagull on one of those 4-wheel Lakewalk bikes holding a craft beer in one of those Bob Dylan harmonica holder thingies around his neck? Other ideas?

Caricature artist needed!

I am planning a Renaissance-themed wedding for Aug. 9 and looking for someone who can do caricatures. The artist we had is unable to come now. I know it is short notice, but if there is anyone who is able to do it we would greatly appreciate it. The reception is in Lake Nebagamon. We want to set up a “Ye Olde Photo” booth, where the guests can get a quick sketch done. If you can do quick sketches of people instead of caricatures, that is OK too.

A Day of Art

I spent most of today meeting with students, but when I wasn’t with young people, I was working in art.

Changes in the Arts Community (and Your Opportunities within It)

A local arts organization is changing its board and its staff, and you can be part of it!

Artists win Awards

When I am not teaching rhetoric, I also volunteer with the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council.

Below is a list of recent award winners. If you see someone you know, congratulate them!

Kathleen Roberts – “On a Prophet”

Video by Dave Richardson for the collaborative art show With Sirens Blaring, coming to the Prøve Gallery Aug. 8-23.

Pudding (The Prøof is in the … )

Visit the new issue of local arts and literature magazine Prøof.

Glad to see the Ennyman and my colleague, the Dean of the School of Fine Arts at UMD, in these pages. Kathleen Roberts gives the Duluth arts community an immense gift in the labor it takes to make this publication happen.

Help with Duplicator

No, I’m not trying to copy myself. I have a Model 70 Conquerer Spirit Duplicator which I am trying to figure out. I have never used one but am interested in how the machine works and would love to get this one back in action. If anyone could share some knowledge or point me in the direction of some good resources I would greatly appreciate it.

Painting the Community: A Portrait of Jeredt Runions

Recent University of Wisconsin-Superior graduate Jessica Prihoda produced this documentary about fellow UW-Superior student and well-known local artist Jeredt Runions.

Prihoda is one of 12 student filmmakers from across the United States nominated for a top award at the Headwaters Film Festival in Bemidji, which was held in April.

Cult screening at Zinema 2 on June 17

If you are into dark and depressing movies (that take place in Duluth) then come check it out! Screenings are at 7 and 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, at Zinema 2. I’ll be doing a Q&A after both shows. It recently played to full houses at the Duluth Superior Film Festival and people seemed to dig it. It is unrated, but the MPAA would easily slap an R on it, so keep that in mind. It is very dark.
