Sushi to go...
Once again justifying the inclusion of this category on this blog. Does it seem odd to you that it isn't lip-synched even when it's in Japanese?

From Yahoo:
LOS ANGELES - Bob Barker is heading toward his last showcase, his final "Come on down." The silver-haired daytime-TV icon is retiring in June, he told The Associated Press Tuesday.
"I will be 83 years old on December 12," he said, "and I've decided to retire while I'm still young."
He'll hang up his microphone after 35 years as the host of "The Price Is Right" and 50 years overall in television.
Though he has been considering retirement for "at least 10 years," Barker said he has so much fun doing the show that he hasn't been able to leave.
"I've gone on and on and on to this ancient age because I've enjoyed it," he said. "I've thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm going to miss it."
Reaching dual milestones, 50 years on television and 35 with "Price," made this an "appropriate" time to retire, Barker said. Besides, hosting the daily CBS program — in which contestants chosen from the crowd "come on down" to compete for "showcases" that include trips, appliances and new cars — is "demanding physically and mentally," he said.
"I'm just reaching the age where the constant effort to be there and do the show physically is a lot for me," he said. "I might be able to do the show another year, but better (to leave) a year too soon than a year too late."

I've noticed that there are quite a few sushi aFISHionados in the PDD bunch. I strongly suggest that we should all get together for a meal of raw fish before Geek Prom next weekend.
Here's my plan:
-Saturday, April 22nd, pre-Geek Prom meal
-Fuji Ya, Downtown St. Paul (www.fujiyasushi.com)
-5:30pm
-Full Geek Regalia
Any takers? We'll be there - and would like y'all to join us. Please let me know if you're interested ASAP and I'll see if we can all get a bit table together.

![]() You can use chopsticks with your eyes closed, and you've memorized hundreds of Kanji. You even answer your phone "moshi moshi." While the number of anime videos you've seen is way higher than the number of dates you've been on, there's hope. Play the sexy, mysterous gaijin, and you'll have plenty of Japanese meat. |

I know this thing has been beaten to death (the topic, not the deer) but maybe all those in favor of keeping the "Creepy Japanese Things" category should be required, as in.dog.neato suggested, to post something weird, disgusting, disturbing or just plain creepy about their place of origin. Here's my opening salvo. Enjoy.

I just thought I would start a new thread regarding this discussion that started under a previous post.
So what do you think? Is the "Creepy Japanese Things" category offensive? Is it just fun? Should PDD be more PC? Are we "Eurocentric numbnuts"?
Let's face it, there are a lot of creepy Japanese things out there on the web, and it's fun to look at them. The gap between our cultures is what makes it fun. (And if you look at trends, we often end up adopting Japanese ideas 10 years later anyway.) Also, if some Japanese people had a blog with a "Creepy American Things" category, I wouldn't be offended at all.
Maybe we should change it to "Creepy Foreign Things" and be equal-opportunity offenders.
Nonetheless, if people feel differently, I will admit that my opinions are stupid, and remove the category.

Wanna Play?
I started learning Go at The Last Exit in Seattle about a decade ago from an old hippie named Tripper John, but haven't bothered with it since I moved out here.
I'm not that good. i suck at it, actually, but I've been learning. I lose a lot. That doesn't discourage me from playing at all because every game I lose teaches me more about it.
If anyone wants to play with the little group we've put together...we're usually at the Brewhouse every Wednesday at about 6:30...Usually upstairs, usually with a pint and a Go board in front of us. All experience levels are welcome to join us.

Japan passed a law making the sale of vintage electronics illegal, including synthesizers (beautiful 80's synthesizers!). So what are the disobedient music geeks do? Hold a vintage electronics march! Sweeeet!

I got a new camera today. I don't even know how to use it but Maria got new boots so I took a picture.
File this under creepy Japanese stuff.
You really must read this article. The series isn't so bad, either. Actually, the whole "NES Page" is actually pretty entertaining!
"...I have so many creepy Japanese things to share."

So, according to this article in the DNT, Japan has a product called Kidsbeer, a nonalcoholic cola that looks like beer, which is marketed to children.
The drink, which comes in a brown bottle and is advertised with the slogan "Even kids cannot stand life unless they have a drink," is lager-colored and foams like beer, but tastes like cola, the article states, citing what is perhaps the funniest slogan in the history of advertising.
Everyone quoted in the article is emphatic that while the product is available in Japan, and is soon to be available in parts of Europe, it will never be available in the United States. Well, duh.
Cola that looks and tastes like cola, but knocks you on your ass with 6% alcohol, however, is perfectly fine. Apparently.
