Purple Rain

I know it is hard to believe but Purple Rain was released 25 years ago this week and I am going to do a special episode of The Local to celebrate. As you may all know David Sedaris was in town last night promoting the soft cover release of his latest book “When You Are Engulfed in Flames.” I had the honor of playing tunes for the waiting crowd which finally wound down at 1AM. I don’t imagine there are any authors that stick around till every last book is signed but he sure did. I could have left early but I was hoping to have him record a promo for my radio show, which he did! I also recorded the show on my phone for those of you that didn’t make it out, It is in 5 parts and may be downloaded below.

An oldie but goodie.

I won’t be making a habit of promoting my Podcast but I was accepted in the iTunes store. The link is below. Subscribe and enjoy. You can also subscribe to my podcast and many others at the KUMD website.

In the shower this morning I was thinking about how the digital lifestyle is taking over my old analog self. I rarely play LP’s or CD’s anymore, Pandora and Podcasts are replacing radio, I read books on my iPhone, get recipes online and communicate with Facebook and Twitter. Many of these tools replace things I used to spend money on which is good for me but I wonder where this will all lead? Papers are going under, bands can’t sell nearly as many CD’s and I’m sure Publishers will see a loss in sales of books now that they are going digital.

I’m not sure what my point is but I am curious how others have adapted/adopted to the digital lifestyle. Is digital good for the human race?

The 2004 Green Man was probably my favorite year. Sure the first one had it’s torrential rains and gale force winds and the last one had record breaking temps and gale force winds but 2004 was great.

My first promo for The Local.

On NPR yesterday there was a segment about Six-Word Memoirs on Love and Heartbreak that was published in Smith Magazine. Inspired by novelist Ernest Hemingway, who, when asked to write a full story in six words, responded: “For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

It was a great listen and now in honor of Saint Valentine it is your turn. My submission is above, leave yours in the comments.

I am really bad at Hearts but I love the game. Looking for some other folks that enjoy playing and wouldn’t mind giving me some pointers. Playing online just isn’t conducive to learning and people get so nasty.

Burrito Union, Carmody Pub or Luce all have pretty good size tables so if you are interested let me know. Tuesdays and Thursdays are good for me.

Jamie Ness and Father Hennepin will be performing in support of the RNC8 this coming Saturday, February 7 at Carmody Irish Pub. The shindig kicks off at 9PM and is $5. A few of the RNC 8 will be on hand to chat with.

Defend the RNC 8!

The RNC 8 are organizers against the 2008 Twin Cities Republican National Convention who have been falsely charged with terrorism in response to their political organizing. Luce Guillen-Givins, Max Specktor, Nathanael Secor, Eryn Trimmer, Monica Bicking, Erik Oseland, Robert Czernik and Garrett Fitzgerald were all members of or associated with the Welcoming Committee, an anarchist collective that helped arrange food, housing and communications for the thousands of people who converged on St Paul in September to protest the RNC. None of the 8 committed any act of violence, and most were arrested during FBI raids of activist centers and homes before the protests even began. Now they are facing multiple felony conspiracy charges, including two counts of “furthering terrorism” under Minnesota’s version of the Patriot Act.

The reach of this case falls far beyond the eight defendants. It should be followed by every union member, every environmentalist, every community organizer, and every Minnesotan who cares about civil liberties. By charging the RNC 8 for what they may have been thinking, and by invoking a law which redefines terrorism to include even civil disobedience, Ramsey County prosecutors have not only attacked these 8 organizers, but the right to organize itself. Please come out and show your support for the RNC 8… because you could be next.

Neck injury

It seems like a lifetime ago that I was in Paramedic school. Our last project before graduation was a mock disaster that was held in the White Bear Lake Middle School. I had forgotten how all out we went in preparations for the drill. Moulage and fake smoke were used with great effect.The day after the drill we flew to Colorado Springs for our exams which we all failed over a technicality. We had to wait a month to take them over.
