Paper over the windows doesn’t necessarily mean this classic restaurant at 2005 W. Superior St. in Duluth’s friendly West End is closed for good, but the word on the street is that it has been closed for a few months and will stay that way. (It was included in the “Breakfast in Duluth” post 10 months ago.)

This was the last of four Jim’s Hamburger locations in Duluth. Jim Overlie was the founder, opening the first one in 1937. I think the West End location opened in the 1940s. Overlie sold in 1985 to Dick and Mary Christensen. Dick died in 2000 and Mary died in 2006. Their son Denny took over ownership.

Other Jim’s Hamburger locations were at:
502 E. Fourth St. (closed in 2005)
414 W. Superior (closed in 1995)
502 E. First St. (closed in 1982)

Of course, every time we create a list on Perfect Duluth Day it always comes with a set of rules. So here we go:

What makes an album a “Duluth album” can be vague, so there is little choice but to determine it on a case-by-case basis. In general, if the band is from the Twin Cities and the bassist is from Duluth, for example, that doesn’t quite cut it. And we’re not counting Bob Dylan, but here’s a link to his discography.

Obviously nothing released in 2000 or later is meant for this list. Starting in 2000 pretty much every punk who could strum a cord or beat a stick on something had the means to record an album and did. That list would be too long.

We’re not including seven-inch records or other singles on the list. If you want to comment about your favorite 45, please do, but it won’t make the master list.

Even qualified albums won’t make the list until a suitable image of the cover art is available. We like things neat and pretty around here. So don’t pull a tiny graphic off the web and call it good. Scan your album covers or do whatever you have to do so the image is a decent size, like 900 pixels if you can manage that.

So here we go — start digging through your collection and help this list out!

I’m not sure if “Drunken Photos from the 1990s” is meant to be a series or not, but I happened to come across two images in my attic that fit the category and raised some questions I thought the Internet could answer.

The photo above is from a house party in the Central Hillside. It’s dated March 12, 1994. I know that it involves some kind of trick, but I can’t remember what the trick is. If memory serves me correctly, the woman on the couch has a slice of bread on her stomach. The guy standing over her burns a lighter under a shot glass or something, and then puts the shot glass over the bread and her stomach skin gets sucked up into the glass or something like that. Has anyone heard of this? It’s been 18 years, so I’ve kind of forgot.

I don’t know who these guys are, but I remember taking the above photograph at the Bob Dylan and Paul Simon concert at Bayfront Park on July 3, 1999. I just felt the need to capture the sheer joy on their faces as they chugged Jägermeister and Miller High Life at that awesome, muddy concert.

These days I wonder if the two clowns in this pic, and the gal peering over them for that matter, are still around town. Perhaps they are upstanding members of society and will be embarrassed by this. Or maybe they’ll be glad to relive the moment. Maybe we’ll find out.
