I’m looking for somebody to get our iTunes library consolidated and organized – or maybe some advice on how to do it. Right now it’s spread out over three lap tops and an external hard drive. Perhaps iCloud is the solution? All I know is that right now it’s a GF and I feel a bit overwhelmed thinking about it. Thoughts or advice? Oh yeah — as much as I would enjoy putting some time into this; it’s a pretty low priority — and with 49% of the vote, I don’t see its status rising. Therefore third-party solutions will be considered.

My parents are taking a little vacation from Minnesota down to Apache Junction, AZ [they will hike more in the 6 weeks they are there than my wife and I will all year]. They have an iPad and very little technical moxy. The condo they are in does not have ISP; and they would like temporary internet service.

The iPad is the standard WiFi model, not SIM card compatible. The ATT mobile hotspot option without contract looks good, but the “modem” or whatever is around $275.

Questions:
(1) Does anybody have any other suggestions for temporary internet service? I looked into Clearwire, but that’s not available.
(2) I checked the eBay; and there are used mobile hotspot devices for sale, however, I’m not really sure on what the procedure is once one of these is purchased. Assuming my parents were going to stick with AT&T [provides their current mobile phone service]; could somebody walk me through the process of acquiring a used device and getting service through it?

My wife looked at the title of this post and gave me a weird look …. am I missing something?

I was at Mt. Royal Foods this morning surveying the doughnut rack with my daughter and I did a double take when I saw a long-john with a slab of fried bacon laid down the middle, on top of the delicious maple frosting. I did not have my camera to take a picture. Is this a “standard build” in the doughnut industry, or is it a custom creation from the bake staff? My wife gave me strict orders to not buy sweets this morning, otherwise I’d probably be posting this on Yelp.

Our last few attempts at using a dog/house sitter had some unintended consequences. Some of the more interesting: various porn-related scenarios [purchased and delivered]; a Mountain Dew “ash tray” was left in front of our basement toilet [we don't smoke]; one of our cars apparently was used and the backseat mistaken for a dumpster; and a “three bears ‘bed scenario’” which resulted in a lot of laundry. Without addressing the vetting process I used in staffing, or commenting on my solicitation process, I’d like some recommendations on area kennels for boarding two dogs: one an old lab and the other an old terrier. We’re heading up to the Lutsen area for the holiday and would love to find help up that way; but assume most facilities are in this area.

I’m trying to get an answer to this question, and am finding conflicting answers. Can one establish a business presence on “The Facebook” without have it tied back to a specific user? For example, is the corporate Target Facebook page associated with a specific user?

We would like to create a Facebook page for our “organization,” but not have it tied back to one person. We would rather have some sort of “corporate login” to use with the site, verses personal logins. Does that make sense?

Two reasons for this (1) I don’t want a Facebook account, but need to use it to communicate with a client base and (2) We have some turnover in staff and don’t want to have to worry about administering “Who’s got access to the page” — would just rather change a password.

Again, I don’t know much about the Facebook, but we would like to set it up similar to the Gmail account we use which just has a generic name under which we do our mailings [works best for us and our interns].

Feel free to hit the low hanging fruit at my expense with jokes and commentary on my aversion to Facebook, but if I could get an answer to this or an explanation on how it works, that would be great.

It looks like I need to replace the lateral sewer line connecting my house to the city system. I qualify for the “up to 3K” reimbursement; but the job is estimated at “around 6K.”

In lamenting to my friends on this issue, multiple responses have been “Schultsy can run a ‘mini’ [excavator]; why don’t you have him dig out the old line? Putting in a new one is pretty straight forward – like roofin’ – you’re just paying for labor.”

Does anybody have any experience with this? Is it simply digging out the old line, removing the old house trap and connecting into the waste out from the house and then hooking up to where it feeds into the city system? What part of this would need a “licensed plumber”? I don’t have “replace sewer line” on my bucket list, and I’d rather take that 3K [which I don't have] and recreate with it.

A student I work with was solicited to write a story for a local college newspaper. The student has a reputation for his dark writing style, but has been recognized as an outstanding author and actor. The paper did not print the following story, as they said it was too graphic. Thoughts or comments?:

Lake Shore Driving: Headless on the North Shore
by Frank Black

Jamie’s got his head in his hands, having just hacked it off with the cordless reciprocal saw Annie ordered for him off the internet the night she overdosed and stopped breathing—and blood came out her ears. This made Jamie very sad, so he cut off his head—and now it’s in his hands—and he’s watching and pondering curiously at how his scabby, haggard heart continues to pump random arcing spurts of thick blood out the ragged, chunky stump of what’s left of his neck—and thinks he should’ve thought this through a bit more, which is an odd thought to think when your decapitated head is resting in your hands.

Jamie’s head is in his hands—severed from his torso—and he’s staring at the ceiling, wondering how to get blood out of stucco. If Annie were here she’d know. Annie knew all about things like that—domestic things—Martha Stuart things: tracking the perfect vein, turning water into wine—getting thick blood stains off a stucco ceiling. Annie liked to play house and she was good at it—and Jamie misses her. He misses everything about her—all the little things—the way she’d smile crookedly when he’d come to out of a seizure—the way she liked to cut herself in the bathtub.

Jamie’s jogging his sawed off head like a basketball and he’d really like to stop, but with the separation of mind and body making it impossible for any electrical impulse in the form of thought or want to travel any further than his hanging esophagus before falling flat on the floor—he just keeps tossing his head back and forth from right hand to left hand to right and back again. He’s yelling at himself to stop—a futile exercise considering there’s no wind to vibrate his vocal folds, assuming he has any folds left after hacking at his throat with a hand-held circular saw—circular saw—more like a glorified pizza cutter with teeth—and even if he could generate any significant level of noise, it’s not like the headless other part of him would hear it…He really wishes he would stop throwing his head around.

If Annie were here she’d take care of it. She’d know what to do. She’d know how to fix this, how to fix him. She was always fixing him. She was good at fixing him—good at making things right—and he’d give anything—any-goddamn-thing to have her here right now to sew his dumbass back together—to pick him up and put him back together.

Jamie took to dying the morning he found Annie in the bathtub. The water was black with blood from cuts on her legs, cuts on her arms, cuts on the bottoms of her feet and her pale blue skin almost reflecting the pool like bone china. It was impossible to know how long she’d been in the water; Jamie had blacked out early the evening before, seven drinks deep into his third drunk that day, but when he grabbed her, when he picked her up and pulled her to him to hold her to him she was cold. Jamie groaned.

Jamie’s head is on the front lawn having been tossed through the dining room bay window.

The rest of him—confused and headless, is feeling his way through the broken glass, climbing out, trying to escape—shredding and tearing the flesh of his arms on jagged shards of window protruding from the frame—leaving clumps and lumps of blood and meat behind as he falls to the ground.

Jamie helplessly watches his headless-self scramble to his feet, stumble in to the street, and get rundown by a school bus full of theology students and all he can do is think about Annie.

Jamie closes his eyes.
