A note of clarification: the park will not offer a rock climbing wall. The quarry itself has been an important winter climbing venue for steep ice and mixed climbing for over 40 years. The park plan includes a climbing component that will improve these opportunities for beginner and intermediate climbers by enhancing ice formation (ice farming) on previously ice-free sections of the cliff, very similar to what is currently being done in the city park at Sandstone.

The Sandstone Ice Park regularly attracts droves of climbers from throughout the region all winter long. By virtue of Quarry Park's size and location, it has the potential to be a world class venue. The fact that the park plan also includes hiking and biking trails (including link-ups with the Superior Hiking Trail and the Duluth Traverse cross city mountain bike trail, and an ADA trail in the amphitheater) will make this brand new city park a nexus for outdoor recreation in West Duluth.

It will be a park for all, and a great repurposing of an abandoned industrial site, as well as relief and rejuvenation for the quarry neighborhood (the quarry has been a site for illegal dumping and other mischief for decades). Read on for all the details!
