Where should I get old photos copied?

Football_Guys

I stumbled across a great old photo of my grandfather. My siblings want copies. Where should I have it copied? I’m looking for someplace I can trust with an old and irreplaceable photo. Thanks for any advice!

Take it to First Photo?

Also, scan it somewhere else and keep a high res (200+ dpi?) digital copy, just in case you lose those copies. FP might do this too, not sure.

I recommend Custom Photo Lab, but I'm more concerned about the details of your image. Is it a very early Central High School team?

I don't think so, Paul. My grandfather grew up in Morgan Park, so I assume he went to high school there. I didn't know him very well, so I don't know a lot of details of his life, but I'm pretty sure he went to Duluth State Teachers College (the school that eventually became UMD), and I'm pretty sure that's what this photo is from. I'm trying to get more info from my dad.

I'd say they look older than high school age. Neat photo!

I did some poking around, and I see Duluth State Teachers College didn't have a football team until 1929. I think my grandfather had left Minnesota by 1932, so I think this must have been taken somewhere in that 1929-1932 window.

My dad was no help about this. He's not sure where his dad went to school here.

I spent way too much time this morning looking through enrollment at the Duluth State Teachers College 1927-1935, and my grandpa's name was never on the list. So these guys must be playing for some other school. Dad thinks grandpa might have gone to a junior college. But was there one? Could this be a high school? Grandpa was born in 1909, so this pic must be sometime between 1926 and 1932.

Any ideas?

Would this be one of the Kelleys/Eskimos teams? That's a bad-ass picture.

A few years ago I was in a similar situation with an old (and large) photo. I ended up taking it to Paper Hog, they where able to scan it in, give me a copy and print a decent copy. Alternatively Jeff Fry and Associates may well be able to do the same.

So I got kind of obsessed with figuring this out and asked Pat Maus at UMD's archives and special collections for help. She pointed me to a book about Duluth Junior College, which existed from 1927 to 1950. In a list of the class of 1930, I found my grandfather's name. The college would have been housed at Denfeld at that time, so that's likely where the picture was taken.

From the 1931 Denfeld Oracle (yearbook). Background appears to be very similar.

Yes, that appears to be the doors to the Denfeld Auditorium. Coach Hunting certainly is a dapper gentleman.
