Organization summary: Hartley Nature Center is a nonprofit environmental learning center located within the 600+ acre Hartley Park. Its mission is to inspire lifelong connections with nature through education, play and exploration. Governed by a board of directors, Hartley has a talented staff of eleven full and part-time educators and administrative support staff, and many community volunteers. Hartley provides programs for over 20,000 children and adults each year: from schools, youth groups and the general public. It operates from a nature center in Hartley Park, a city-owned park with diverse forest, wetland and stream habitats, over five miles of hiking and ski trails, and beautiful ridges overlooking Lake Superior. The 7,500-square-foot nature center is designed as a model of energy-efficient, environmental building practices and provides classrooms, exhibit areas, offices and storage areas to support and enhance programs.

Position Summary: Working in partnership with the director of operations and other staff, the education director is responsible for managing Hartley’s school field trip and summer camp programs, including program management, curriculum development, seasonal staff hiring, training and supervision.

Responsibilities: Responsible for Hartley’s field trip and summer camp program delivery, including:

  • Recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and supervising Hartley’s environmental education interns.
  • Maintaining communication with school group clientele (marketing, program evaluation, etc.).
  • Serve as educator for visiting school groups, summer camps, and programs for the general public.
  • Refine and develop Hartley’s program content, ensuring quality and mission delivery.
  • Maintain and manage educational materials and equipment.
  • Assisting with special events, strategic planning, fundraising events, and other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of natural history.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in related field; master’s degree preferred. Three to five years of experience teaching environmental education, including program and curriculum development. Supervisory experience.
