Fines for boozing in public to double

With no discussion, the Duluth City Council on Monday unanimously doubled the fine for “consumption of alcoholic beverages in public places.” The likely meaning of this is that if you are sipping a jug of wine on the Lakewalk you could be fined $200 instead of $100. If you are guzzling a fine locally brewed beer, however, all officers will look the other way.

When I first read your headline, the meaning I got from it was "It's OK to be twice as drunk in public." Or for twice as many people to be publicly intoxicated. But I'm an idiot.

What about the tables put out on public sidewalks by local eateries? Can one drink there?

Hopefully I've idiot-proofed the headline by switching it from "Fine for boozing in public to double" to "Fines for boozing in public to double."

Awww... I liked it the other way.

Local eateries have to pay to have tables out on public sidewalks, which essentially makes the outdoor tables part of the eatery.

What? There was no council debate? Where the hell was Ramos? The local indignant quotient needs to be maintained!

But there was council debate on the issue of sidewalk drinking, young man. If you paid attention, you would know that.

Thanks. Being called young at age 53 is a true bonus. I must have missed the 100+ Long Range Public Boozing meetings as PDD is the first I've heard of this.

Damn, I guess the ghetto dudes are going to have to up the muggings to afford to keep drinking on the Lakewalk.

They'll start raking it in once the college students are back.
