Perfect Duluth Day Outdoor Summer Concert Primer 2014

With one of Duluth’s coldest and snowiest winters behind us, it’s time to warm up for summer music. Venues like Bayfront Festival Park and Big Top Chautauqua host major touring acts throughout summer, along with a number of smaller summer concert series put on by Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center, Summer (Mostly) Thursdays, and Chester Creek Concert Series. There will be more bands to see than time to see them. Here’s a look at some of the summer 2014 highlights.

Trampled by Turtles, Doomtree, Low and Haley Bonar
Bayfront Festival Park
Duluth’s own Trampled by Turtles headline a show featuring Doomtree, Low and Haley Bonar.


July 6
The Hold Steady
Clyde Iron Works
Brooklyn-based rock band the Hold Steady plays Duluth in support of its new album, Teeth Dreams.

Big Wave Dave and the Ripples with the Fractals

The surf and rockabilly sound of the Fractals meets the funky soul of Big Wave Dave and the Ripples.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy carries on the tradition of the legendary big bands and orchestras under the big top.


August 1-2
Howling Moon Festival

This two-day music festival features the classic 1970s rock band the Guess Who as its opening-night headliner, and Brandi Carlile on day two.

Bayfront Blues Festival 2014
Bayfront Festival Park
This year’s blues fest features Los Lonely Boys, the Pink Family Band, Reverend Raven & the Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys and Robert Randolph & the Family Band.

Goo Goo Dolls
Fortune Bay Resort Casino
The Goo Goo Dolls will perform, featuring opening acts Daughtry and The Plain White Tees.


August 9
Ziggy Marley
Big Top Chautauqua
Six-time Grammy winner Ziggy Marley performs under the big top.


August 10
Willie Nelson and Family
Big Top Chautauqua
Willie Nelson returns for his seventh performance under the big top.


August 19
Theory of a Deadman
Clyde Iron Works
The Vancouver-based band Theory of a Deadman performs outdoors at Clyde Park.


September 6
Twin Ports Bridge Festival
This year the Twin Ports Bridge Festival is being held in conjunction with the Duluth Harvest Festival, and admission is free. Most of the bands have not been announced yet, but one confirmed act is That 1 Guy.

Canned Heat has been named headliner for Saturday night of Bayfront Bluesfest.

Bayfront must be the only major bluesfest in the world to never have B.B. King as an act.  Maybe its not as major as I think it is.

Update: This post has been modified to reflect a change of date for the Theory of a Deadman concert. The show, originally scheduled for June 22, has been rescheduled for Aug. 19.
