This week: candidates, airplanes and stewardesses

Here’s a sampling of what you have to look forward to this week on the PDD Calendar.

The name of the band is Järvelän Pikkupelimannit and from what I can see from their video that’s pronounced “fun.” They’re swinging through from Finland to play tonight at Sacred Heart.

I know you usually get all your voting information from PDD, YouTube and DNT editorials, but you could see the candidates up close and personal this week and think for yourself. Just saying. The candidates for the Senate seat will be at the Playhouse on Tuesday and the candidates for the Senate and House seats will be at St. Scholastica on Thursday.

The first show of the Playhouse season opens Thursday. Boeing Boeing is a farce set in the ’60s in which a playboy architect attempts to juggle relationships with three stewardesses. Because this is the ’60s and they weren’t called flight attendants back then.

And we aren’t done with festival season. Not by a long shot. Oktoberfest runs Friday and Saturday and the Duluth Airshow is Saturday and Sunday.

The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra has the first concert of its new season on Saturday at the DECC with music by Copland and Tchaikovsky.

So what are you doing this week? Can we tag along? Any upcoming events that you want to promote? Let us know!`

In a related note to the calendar item NBC Premiere Night, if you watch the season premiere of Parks & Recreation tonight you'll see the debut of the first TV commercial for the PDD Calendar.

And who doesn't get excited about commercials, right?

Plan your potty breaks carefully, it's just a 15-second spot. Act like one of those dippy people who watch the Super Bowl for the funny, funny ads. Shoosh everyone in the room.

Paul and everyone, congratulations!!!  That is very cool.

On a different note, just wanted to mention that three very-well-reviewed films are opening/playing this weekend at the Zinema, and next week another v-w-r film opens, Robot and Frank; and next month, two lose-your-mind-they're-so-great films Compliance and Arbitrage opens.  (I don't work at Zinema, I just love films and want to support them).

And lastly -- why is this font so teeny-tiny all of a sudden?

The font situation must have something to do with the tool bar we added yesterday to the comment field that allows you to italicize and link to things without using HTML code.

Thanks for adding that, I think everyone has tired of my ALLCAPS method of emphasizing points.

Well, well, not so fast on the TV spot tonight. We just heard from the Northland's NewsCenter:

"I am afraid it looks like we are getting preempted from Parks & Rec tonight due to Political rates."

Apparently what that means is that some political groups bought more expensive ads and PDD got bumped out, which is I guess a fairly common thing.

Of the tens of thousands of musicians who owe their every last waking breath to Bob Dylan, I think Mason Jennings has to be among my top twenty least favorites.  I would rather eat sauteed rat-link stroganoff than pay 30 hard earned dollars to hear that jerry curled ego maniac remind me that good song writers, like Shelby Lynne, are few and further between with each passing Tweet.

Bob Dylan sucks.
