You can run but you can’t hide hate

I stopped at the Lakeside Super One for groceries and saw that the Christian youth ministry “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide” had a table set up outside and was collecting money to “prevent teen suicide.” I didn’t immediately recognize the name of the group, but once I thought about it I realized it was this bunch.

Really? This group was labeled an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Law Poverty Center. I wonder if Super One realizes what this group represents. I will be calling and asking them that question. YCRBYCH representatives are very dishonest about themselves when they ask to speak at schools, and I would bet they don’t reveal their true agenda when asking to solicit.

According to Boyd Hanson, director of human resources at Miner’s Inc., which owns the Super One Foods chain, there was never proper approval for the You Can Run But Cannot Hide group to solicit in front of the Lakeside Super One … or any other Super One for that matter.

Hanson says the group presented itself to a Lakeside Super One employee as a Christian ministry with a mission to stop teen suicide. The employee said that would be fine, but when the store manager, John Radcliff, arrived he asked the group to leave because Super One has a no-solicitation policy.

“We allow the Salvation Army to ring the bell in our entrances … some of those kind of things,” Hanson said. “But generally speaking anything that would have any kind of a political or religious-type view we don’t allow to do that. … Why this group came to our store we don’t even know. … We just don’t get involved in those kind of things.”

If they really cared about teen suicide, they would not tell kids they can run but they can't hide. 

I wonder whether the money is going toward an actual charity, or just to the group?

It is going toward Bradlee Dean's mounting legal fees. If they are doing this at Super One, the management definitely needs to be aware of their dubious ties:

I would like to know what Super One's response is. In the past few years I have got the feeling that Super One doesn't share some of my social, cultural and political values but don't really don't know other than a few things here and there.

The Lakeview Super One manager states that the YCRBYCH group is gone, and he had "no idea" it is an anti-gay hate group. The manager of my local Super One in Kenwood told me he does not allow groups like that to fund raise. I could not find a telephone number for Super One headquarters, but sent an e-mail to HQ and have not heard back from them.

Super One Foods stores are owned by Miners, Inc. 

I spoke to Boyd Hanson, director of human resources at Miner's, and the short version of the story is there was never official approval for this group to be there, and ultimately the group was asked to leave by the store manager.

I called Super One this morning, they seemed a bit surprised to hear about the whole thing. They promised to investigate and called back within the hour to say, "That solicitation has been stopped." Thank you Miners Inc. for listening and responding so fast!

Apparently they didn't "stop" the whole operation because when I went to the East End Superior Super One at about 5:30 p.m. this evening they were soliciting outside the doors.

Bradlee Dean also gave a very detestable commencement "prayer" for the state's legislative session.

This guy is a real piece of work. anyone who carries around as much hate and resentment as he does has gotta have some deeeeeeply closeted issues. So much so that I'd almost be willing to lay even money on him being the culprit of the disappearance of the Ruby Slippers.

Groups like this have very specific under-handed tactics for getting out their hateful messages.  It appears that is what they did in this case.  I applaud Miner's and Super One for trying their best to react to being played by these hate mongers and I accept their statement as being sincere.

That is disappointing. If you have seen them outside a local business would you please take a moment to call that business and let them know that you do not appreciate them allowing a group to solicit in your neighborhood that is labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center as one of 12 hate groups in Minnesota. Tell them to look up YCRBYCH on Wikepedia to get an idea of what their business is supporting.

Too bad someone can't get the attention of the DNT or local TV news to spread the word quickly as to who this group really is and what it is really about.

That would possibly convince them to move along if they keep getting booted within minutes of showing up somewhere.

I just called the Hermantown Walmart and spoke to a manager named Roxanne.  She told me they did have permission to be there for 3 days through tomorrow, but was surprised when I told her about their other goals besides "suicide prevention."  She apologized, and said a group like that usually wouldn't have gotten permission if they were aware of their reputation.  She said she would be "looking into" this group.  She actually seemed sincere enough, but the response was sort of non-committal.  I guess we'll be able to see if anything was done based on whether or not they're still soliciting there tomorrow.  

I'd recommend the same as those above have suggested.  Call these businesses and let them know that this is not an organization deserving of support.

This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality is an abomination."

Sounds like Dean thinks gay people should be murdered.  Walmart and Super One are helping this nut.  Has anyone heard more about Walmart supporting this?  It sounds like they were still raising funds there later in the day.

Although if Super One truly has a no-solicitation policy, I have to wonder what the deal is with the Boy Scouts who bag your groceries sometimes. They have a desk set up nearby for some type of solicitation.

I didn't think I was accusing Super One of anything more than what has already been said by others.  If Cleta is to be believed, the YCRBYCH was still out at Super One at 5:30pm, which may mean that YCRBYCH was raising money there for hours and were not kicked off the premises nearly as quickly as they should have been.  YCRBYCH was given permission to be there and raise money from at least one Super One employee.  Given the number of hours YCRBYCH was at Super One, there was probably tacit approval for the YCRBYCH fund raising from more than one Super One employee.  How could YCRBYCH be there for hours and other people working at Super One not know?  

Letting YCRBYCH solicit and raise money and goodwill at the Super One for hours is a form of "helping."  Super One employees weren't helping YCRBYCH in every way possible, but they were helping in some ways possible.  I think it would be wrong to say that the people at Super One did not help YCRBYCH in any way, shape, or form.  

What the Super One employees did not realize, I hope, is that they were helping anti-gay nuts.  But Super One and Walmart were helping anti-gay nuts, and that is unfortunate.  

When I said that they were helping anti-gay nuts, the emphasis should be on the "anti-gay nuts" part.  Joe Paterno may have said to himself "I can't believe I helped a child molester," with emphasis on "child molester."   

But I was very concerned with Walmart's continuing allowing the YCRBYCH solicitation for so long.  Does anyone know how long they were at Walmart?  It looks like YCRBYCH was at Sams and Walmart a long time.

Sam, you said, "Walmart and Super One are helping this nut." Present tense. While that was true for Walmart at the time you made your comment, it does not seem to be true in Super One's case.

Barrett, I think I made that comment at night after Super One was closed, so I didn't mean that Super One was actively helping YCRBYCH right at that moment.  The present tense is used in a number of ways to refer to actions that are not currently underway.  

One example is when a newspaper, referring to a past event, says "Fire hits a city building, the president defends the new deputy, and in football the Vikings lose."  All are present tense, but about past events.  The present tense has a wide range of uses.

And, in general, Super One's helping YCRBYCH in the past helps YCRBYCH in the future.  Super One is a trusted brand, and some people may have thought that if Super One let YCRBYCH solicit on site, then YCRBYCH is a trustworthy group.  YCRBYCH also has extra money now to advocate for their cause as a result of the hours they spend soliciting funds at Super One.  

It is not just about what happened while YCRBYCH was soliciting.  It continues after as well.

He should probably not allow Salvation Army, then, since they are notorious for refusing to help gay people and pushing Christianity.

Super One is helping the Salvation Army too?

The Salvation Army does help some people in Duluth (note the use of present tense to describe their helping in general, even though it may mainly refer to past help).  But it is also a conservative Christian organization that has been known to discriminate against gay people.

Many Super One locations also have dumpsters in the parking lot where you can donate aluminum cans to the Boy Scouts, a group that discriminates on the basis of religion, sexual orientation, and gender.
