Happy Higgs Boson!
By baci on Jul 4, 2012 in Videos
This is an excellent “get-up-to-speed” doc on what the Higgs boson is all about. It’s a very well spent hour. Personally, I’m more of a silly-string theorist myself but these guys might be on to something.

Star Tribune: “U prof a player in Higgs particle puzzle“
Higgs Bosun walks into a church. The priest confronts him and says, “I’m sorry but you can’t be here!” Higgs Bosun replies “Okay, but you can’t have mass without me.”
Hawking owes $100.
I didn’t make it to the end of the hour, but I still doubt whether they summed up in a sentence why people put billions into this thing. They said it was the most significant science event ever, and…..?
So as lay person, I’m going to take a stab at what no one else wants to come out and admit here because they’re all afraid of ridicule. The ‘lil HB’ is about understanding space better so we can develop a nuclear powered space machine capable of traveling to distant galaxies, so space commanders can have lots of space adventures with sexy exotic aliens wearing mini skirts and beehive hairdos. Bam, nailed it!
Heh … the whole hip fundie xtian universe is ablaze with praise for the “god” particle finally proving to the nasty evil atheists and agnostics that G-d exists.
(There’s even an aggregate twitter repost list of the whole deal here.
@Herzog … yes, all that and … it’s probably going to be alot closer to space folding.
Here’s my best attempt. Confirmation of the HB is proof of the Standard Model. The Higgs Field (as defined by the HB) imparts mass on particles. If (when?) we’re able to manipulate the Higgs field, we’ll be able to control one more part of E=MC2
Wait, that thing is ugly! I said hot aliens, not Bat Man. My lady and I just had a huge argument this weekend because I kept insisting Samsquantch were aliens, and she said it made no sense that they would look like primates and not be from this planet, and I said that just because they’re from another planet does not mean that they can’t have earth-like characteristics. You know, creatures from abroad will need legs to get around, eyes to see, and body hair to protect them from flesh eating insects. Which is why I fully believe that in a universe with billions of life spawning galaxies, there’s a sexy alien out there somewhere.
Mmm … warp drive … I suppose we’ll have to wait another hundred years or so until we get into that realm of physics.
Montgomery Scott was born when?
I’ll take LeeLoo over a 3rd stage Guild Navigator any day.
I’m just sayin’ funding big science is well worth it.
So many crazy Higgs Boson stories.
