Dear Homegrown Diary

Sunday:

The mayor was late at Tycoons but, given his pre-proclamation speech involving the real/made-up story of Homegrown, which may or may not involve a story of fire-ring elves, makes sense and is forgiven.

Mr. Ness went on to win the Homegrown Pub Quiz at Carmody, leading to a who’s-who of wearing the chicken hat. Devon yelled well, and everyone got a prize.

For this old slag, the Repo Man-style back at Tycoons was worth an open-eyed listen after so many hemp-inspired ales.

There was much talk of slipping over to Luce, or back to Carmody. I’m sure readers can fill in.

Safe to say, it was a rowdy first night, leaving one to wonder if we all can hold out. I save my strength, it looks like Monday is here.

Luce was fun last night. Around 150 through the door and steady all night. All 3 bands performed well and no one puked on me. I call that a Homegrown win. I saw a Gizzard, a Qwizzard, and an Ozzie.

Monday
The plan was for low-key Monday given the shenanigans of opening night. For a record second night in a row, my bar-averse partner made it to Homegrown sets.

Somewhere in the rawk of The Undesirables was a lullaby, but it had the reverse effect of Brahms. Good to get a kick in the ass from the get-go when starting late in the Homegrown hop. Punkgloriouscountryrawkcrow.

Partner was holed up at Carmody for Coyote ("They were good." She likes her banjo and guitar vibe and women singing!) and I met her in time for Leon our home fixer and A Band Called Truman. Leon gave "Cool Hand Luke" a run for its money in the sweat category, and we dug the Costello-esque tunes. Sarah "Pipes" Krueger lent her amazing voice to It's Just a Shot Away.

Funny thing about teetotaling Homegrown, you notice the people who admonish the sage advice of the Homegrown gurus: Don't blow your whole load by Tuesday. If I win my wagers on who will or won't make it to Saturday, I'll donate it to my favorite Kickstarter plea.

It could be me, despite a mellow Monday.

Yay Homegrown day duex.

You should only be two eights tired at this point.

Poetry is going to need a bigger venue next year. And watches for every poet. Music videos were great, and there are encore showings at Zinema 2 tonight (6 p.m.; free) and Sunday at Chester Creek Café (2 p.m.; free).

The music videos tonight are at 5:30, not 6. That's what the schedule says, anyway.

Yes. My apologies.

If you want to know how to spell Homegrown to everyone, it's Brown Eye Blue Eye at Teatro. Yes, it's a party, but also about those who may live to play DHF 20 or so years from now.

The standing O was as much for the great job they did as for the hope.

Then a gap, which others can fill in.

Next stop was the first-ever DHF show at Grandma's Sports Garden (really?). Boomchucks brought it as the "other Ness" could only watch. And if you thought it couldn't get higher, Dave and his Ripples made it so.

Meanwhile, Narum was getting kicked out and I'm sure there's a story to tell about Twins and Sacred Heart. Please do.

Oy, they say, here comes the Turtles Wednesday. Homegrown is humming, and here comes the gas.

The Aaron Gall and the Likely Story show at Sacred Heart got off to a late start, but once the music started it was looking pretty good. If you have never seen this band you really need to pencil it in on your calendar.

Then off to Twins for glitter and the American Rebels, they sounded awesome and were properly rocking with a smoke machine. A glitter cannon was planned but due to cannon issues the glitter was distributed to some unreliable patrons who "shared" it with others.

I caught the last three songs of Hattie and her Man Band at the Garden, and stepped over to Lake Ave Cafe during set change to check out the Adjustments. The six-string bass player was ripping it up.

Back to G-Ma's for the Boomchucks, and the first part of Big Wave Dave. Then off to bed so I could get up early and tell you all what happened (at work).

If I had an iphone I would have it remind me to take some time off for #hgmf13.

Respite at Carmody for some Dead Cat Ale was precious Tuesday. Just precious.

Wednesday:
Work kept me from Clyde. Promised myself to take Wednesday off. No matter, went to Brewhouse for Sarah, but couldn't stay for the heat, a most notable HMF happening. Ended up at Carmody lite, some AC and the Mudpuppies and the remainders from Clyde, including the Mayor and TBT. Watched the Twins get no-hit.

Superior awaits. I'm sure there are those who can fill in the Wednesday gaps. It sounded and felt epic.

I got to Clyde @ 3:15 for my volunteer door guy shift. The line was moving pretty good and was totally gone by 4. People kept a steady pace of arrivals until show time at 7.

Equal X-change put on a good show but the crowd seemed to be indifferent to the musical styling of this particular band.

Father Hennepin had the place almost full for their set and sounded great, lots of smiles in the crowd.

Turtles started on time and played a solid set, they went a little long, I hope Gallus is not pissed.

Overall a very easy night at the Clyde, I had to leave after TBT to go to work so I did not catch any of the upstairs music.

Tonight is a run for the border, and then Chicken Spur!

Rough morning. I got a burger at Who's Bar and headed to Bev's for Matt Ray. The place was packed and rockin' for not even 9:00. I did a shot of whiskey from a squirt gun on the sidewalk.

Over to the Pagan for Portage. The place was packed and getting a beer seemed like a mini Homegrown miracle in its' self. Portage sounded awesome, B-girl wanted merch, none found.

Off to Norms for Sexhawk and Junk Boat. Sexhawk rawked loudly and had the crowd entertained. Junk Boat put up a stellar performance and the conga line was a nice touch. I also saw a young woman who was too drunk to put her flip flops back on correctly. After a minute of trying she walked off with one on and one in her hand.

Took the short bus over to the Main Club and played some improv tunes on the way with some not so rhythmic drum players.

Cars & Trucks were loud and had the Main Club jumping. A great turnout for Soup-nite.

Chicken Spur capped off the evening and as usual I ordered more than I cared to eat.

Bring on Friday.

Matt Ray at Bev's was great, I got right up there, and rocked out to an excellent band. They are amazing! Loved Portage too, and got myself an India Pagan Ale, but there were way too many people to move much. I did see a man in a chicken face covering, I guess you could call it, and I was standing right behind Rich Narum, who despite the crowds, was able to dance with his woman.

Looking forward to tonight, I am a big fan of Galynn Lea (Snobarn) and Uprising. And of course, my nabes, Tangier 57.

Gizzard sighting outside Norm's Thursday night.

The guy I saw was neither Quizzard, Slizzard, nor Gizzard. It wasn't just a Chicken hat, it was like a head covering.... I asked him if it got passed around and he said no, it got too sweaty, that'd be way gross.
