April 14: Another Perfect Duluth Day
By jessige on Apr 14, 2012 in Current Events
Seems like a couple times a year we get one of these, but rarely in April.
I played some sidewalk tic-tac-toe, cleaned up the garden from last year, painted a couple chairs, and took a walk on the beach. I wore flip-flops and sunglasses and took deep breaths of the south wind.
What did you do on this edition of the Perfect Duluth Day?

It was pretty intense out at Jay Cooke Park today.
Went grocery shopping. Trout fresh off the boat in Cornucopia, milk fresh from the dairy in Washburn, and sourdough bread fresh from the bakery in Ashland. Then, back to Duluth for a whiskey and water in the backyard.
I kayaked out to the state natural area on park point and then took a nap on the beach. I like to mix my exercise with laziness
Paul, I’m not sure if I just watched frog battery, or frog sexual assault.
Any frogs attempting to get froggy in the big lake would have had some shrinkage. It was cooooooooold.
I started out the day with a fine cup of Alakef coffee, roasted by one of the finest coffee roasters in town.
Then my middle son and I ventured out to a friend’s house for warm-out-of-the-oven cinnamon rolls and to see their new gerbils.
We then ventured over to Superior for a visit with one of the best childcare providers the Twin Ports has to offer. (Seriously, let me know if you’re looking -- she is amazing.)
Then Walter and I went up to one of Duluth’s fine union grocery store establishments and got the week’s shopping done.
Later on in the afternoon, I took the aforementioned coffee roaster and a friend over to the Gitchee Gumee brewfest, and the kids and I went to Brighton Beach and added a few hundred rocks to the bottom of the Lake.
We finished up the day with pizza and a movie. And now everyone is dirty and tired and crashing into bed, wondering if we will wake up to Winter Wonderland…
Surveyed the Country Inn of Two Harbors’ 18-hole miniature golf course. Review pending the scouting of Edge Waters’ course.
I went South for the Sad Vampire Comedy Hour. We also hit a textiles sale at the U of MN. And a walk through Uptown.
Isn’t there a ceremonial “a perfect Duluth day is not about the weather” here?
Started my day with a big cup of Alakef Coffee (Sumatra Sidikilang Tabu Jamu…om. nom. nom.)
Listened to a bunch Clash on Pandora.
got the house cleaned while kids played and the missus did some grocery shopping and spent QT with #1 son…outside, got the remainder of the black dirt at the bottom of my #1 compost bin transferred to planter boxes.
hit up the Brewfest at 4…learned of the passing of a friend. Hoisted a brew in his honor. Castle Danger brewing, by the way…quite excellent. particularly the Stout. Jim and I hit the cycle with their pours and didn’t find a bad one among them.
I walked with dog outside all of the glorious morning. Changed into shorts; saw Mr. Emmadogs off to CSS film fest.
Walked with dog outside all of the glorious afternoon. Afternoon nap with dog, open window and lovely spring breeze.
White wine, fish tacos, evening breeze. What a beautiful day!
Strolled with three kids and one wife along the Western Waterfront Trail from Indian Point to the Smithville boat launch and back. Unleashed one-year-old at Indian Point. Observed him chewing on twigs and bark. Observed wife worrying about this. Watched professional tree trimmers practice rappelling in nearby big trees. Drank “Dr. Pop” purchased at Save-A-Lot, admiring name.
I drove down to the cities and had an amazing day catching up with an old friend who was in town for a conference. Probably one of the most enjoyable days I’ve had in months, so maybe I had a Perfect Minneapolis Day? However, today I’m having a Perfect Duluth Day half-napping on my couch, catching up on sitcoms, and ignoring my laundry.
Today is perfect Duluth spring weather, breezy, nice and cool, not cold, and a light spring shower, wouldn’t want it everyday, but it’s pretty nice still.
Loaded bicycles with gear and rode out to Ely’s Peak. Met a friend and rock climbed all day. Biked back with wind behind us and then dinner at Duluth Grill. After all that, had to walk bikes up the hill. Sauna and bed.
Started it out with breakfast at a new to me hole in the wall in Superior. Then put my feet up with a book in the garage and “supervised” while my other half reassembled his motor. He was a little behind his goal of a 6pm fire up, but it was running by about 830. Had a late grilling session with some brats and climbed into bed with the window open. Sadly, woke up this morning to a freezing cold room. Welcome back to winter!
Went running Saturday afternoon along the lake between Canal Park and Lester River — OMG it was indeed a Perfect Duluth Day.
Tamara, I’m curious, what’s the name of the child care place in Superior that you recommend?
Nate: she is an in-home provider. She is awesome. If you want to know more, please contact me at gorpladyatgmaildotcom.
The lady who works the perfume counter at the Fetus made my perfect day the other day when she painstakingly did a return so I could get my 10% off Co-op discount. She is sainted utmost, and one helluva gal, and looks very good in a receipt scarf I might add.
And you too may have a PDD when you remember to save ten percent at the Fetus using your Whole Foods membership! And when you have a Perfect Duluth Deal like I did yesterday, you’ll never go back to saying bad things about this town or Scandinavians, ever, except when like, they don’t pick up trash, like along the beach when they walk by it.
