I was at Mt. Royal Foods this morning surveying the doughnut rack with my daughter and I did a double take when I saw a long-john with a slab of fried bacon laid down the middle, on top of the delicious maple frosting. I did not have my camera to take a picture. Is this a “standard build” in the doughnut industry, or is it a custom creation from the bake staff? My wife gave me strict orders to not buy sweets this morning, otherwise I’d probably be posting this on Yelp.

Maple-bacon is an awesome combination, but certainly not unique to Duluth or Mount Royal. I had maple-bacon donuts a few years ago at a place in Portland, Oregon. I’ve heard of other bakeries carrying similar creations in the Twin Cities. In moderation, it’s well worth the cost and the calories, as far as I’m concerned.
Another great option, if you have a waffle maker -- crumble up bacon and put it in the batter. Serve the bacon waffles with maple syrup.
I’m pretty sure that doughnut was made famous by Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland. It’s jumped up all around the past couple years.
I think the current bacon craze is a bit disturbing. Get it the hell away from me. Everyone else, go nuts.
Bacon is the gateway meat.
The Greenery offers a maple bacon-topped treat as well.
The Anchor Bar has a shot with bacon called Pancake Breakfast.
Zacaroo is right. As a fella from Ptown, I can say, with certainty, that Voodoo Donut has been making their maple bacon bar for a long, long time. With the doughnut shops springing up around Minnesota, many of the staples from Voodoo are showing up. Grape Ape, Old Dirty Bastard, and the Butterfingering. Yum-oh!
This “treat” is now in my subconscious and crying out for artery clogging, deep fried, maple flavored death!
I have a vegan friend who lived in Portland for a couple years and she would only eat one thing with meat -- - the Maple Bacon Bar from Voodoo Doughnuts.
Actually that sounds “tasty,” but is it healthy? “Probably not.”
Yup, a voodoo creation.
Try deep-frying pancakes in bacon fat, if you have a deathwish.
The Voodoo Doughnut’s maple bacon doughnut is something to be coveted. I’m glad to hear it’s making an appearance in Duluth. I hope it’s as delicious as I don’t get to Portland very often.
