Small Visitors

Some pals are visiting from Seattle next week. Their kids are 3 and 6, I think. We don’t have kids, so we’re not sure what amuses them. What are some cool Duluth things we could do that would be interesting to both kids and grownups? I’m thinking Hartley Nature Center, throwing rocks into the lake, maybe the harbor tour. What else might delight them?

The Children's Museum and Train Museum at the Depot ... fun for kids and adults!

Vista cruise, as well as Children's Museum and Train Museum. Gooseberry Falls in season.

From experience, two hours stuck on a boat may be a bit much for a three year old. If it is not too windy, my kids never get tired of playing in the sand at the beach. If the three year old is very adventurous you can try the alpine coaster. Otherwise any trail near a river in Duluth can turn into a magical adventure for little ones.

The Vista is done for the season.

Ditto the trails along rivers suggestion. Amity Creek is easy for kids and strollers, and the old stone bridges are always a hit. The weather's getting a little cold, though.

Ditto the trains at the Depot.

Enger Tower and/or Spirit MT "Timber Cruiser" if the weather is tolerable..

Oh, man, I had no idea the Vista was done.

I didn't realize little kids could go on the Timber Twister, either, but I just checked and they can ride with someone 16 or older. The cutoff age is 3.

I have not been to the children's museum. Will it be cool to a sophisticated 3-year-old from a big city?

The Marine Museum in Canal Park is free and was a favorite destination for my two weird children when they were 3 and 6. Still is, for some reason. Kids would also probably enjoy the aquarium, but it'd be kind of pricey.

Yes, absolutely, the Children's Museum will be cool to a child from the big city. It's comparable to anything they have on either coast.

And the Children's Museum is a toofer. If the kids are bored in there you can go check out the trains on the same ticket. We like the Aquarium as well but the Children's/Train museum is a much better deal.

Playfront Park. It's free and will tire them out while you sit and chat with your friends.

The Zoo is always a good place to keep children amused while the adults get a chance to walk and talk.

Thanks so much for these - a bunch of ideas I had not thought of.

If your friends have a passport membership to a zoo or a museum, they might be able to get into the aquarium or childrens museum free.

A romp in the skywalk system is fun for mobile kids on cold days.

Also the Christmas parade is friday night 630pm.

Bowling is fun -- the places that have bumper bowling make bowling possible even for wee kids. I think the place downtown has this little ramp that you set the ball on and the kid pushes it and it goes right down the lane.

Sadly neither our zoo nor our aquarium can hold a candle to those in Seattle, so I would skip those. (I lived there for 10 years) My votes are Train Museum, Amity creek/seven bridges/Hawk Ridge, Enger Tower,Bayfront/Marine Museum/Lift bridge.....even the skywalks could be a novelty to the little folks from Seattle. They were to me!

I don't like the Duluth Zoo, the animals don't look well and the cages are too small. I took my kid there once when she was small and it only depressed us. We do, however, still go on occasion to Animal Allies to play with the cats there. We call AA the AA hotel & spa.

There is a Family Fun tab on the PDD Calendar.

It doesn't mention everyday attractions like the Duluth Children's Museum, but it will alert you when various fairy tales and other children's theatrical productions and whatnot are being staged.

I want to not like it because it's so clearly designed to separate parents from their money, but my five-year-old nephew loves Adventure Zone in the Canal. There's a playset and huge inflatable slide for toddlers as well as coin-op games and mini golf for the older one.

Picking up taconite along the railroad. All this taconite needs to be picked up.

bluenewt

What is the best taconite picking spot?

jessige

In the taconite field, natch.

Sorry.

Bentleyville will be open by next week--little kids would like that.

Sure don't seem to hear much about the aquarium anymore? I've not been there for two years. Last visit it looked in disrepair and dirty. Is there a reason to go back again? And it was mentioned that it's expensive? Did they raise the prices? I recall it as cheap?

DNT's Take the Kids blog is a pretty good look at family activities, it's updated regularly.

Many attractions that adults like can be made kid and toddler friendly by altering your pace and your attention span. I would say that there are a lot of free and cheap things to do with kids and adults together. Getting out in nature is just about perfect but you will need to be prepared for the weather. And you will need to adjust your expectations for how long and how far to go.

The Duluth Public library kids and toddler time are good.

Fitgers Mall can be fun for kids since it's so slow they can run around and there is a great bookstore there.

I have found that people often get excited about spending money on vacation. Not sure why. Explorations in Downtown Duluth and the Toys for Keeps and Jay Skylark in Canal Park are fun stores and also rare examples of independent, local stores closing down the big box and national chains (Duluth hasn't had a Toys R Us since about 2005).

Also the Toddler Tiki time at the Edgewater water park is a good way to spend a cold morning with the kids. You would need to call and check for sure but I think that $13 for each kid/adult combo for 8-noon weekdays.

The Duluth Public Library sometimes has passes for free admission to local attractions, such as the Aquarium, the Depot, and Split Rock Lighthouse. The Library's Museum Pass page doesn't have much information at the moment, but you can see some of the locations that have been available in the past (by reading small text in a photo).

For me to willingly endure The Edge would require an additional expenditure at the liquor store.

@Lithis the Museum Pass thing at the library ran out of funds, and appears to not have any plans to start again as far as I know.

Last time I checked, the children's museum didn't have anything special on exhibit. At the moment, it's not somewhere I'd take guests. Of course, you get into both if you pay for the train museum, and kids like to climb into the trains.

Bentleyville is fun; advise your out-of-towners to bundle up! You could pack some snacks and hike to the big rock at Hartley, then down into the pine forest. I think the kids would love the aquarium. They'll play with the toy boats for longer than you want to sit there, true, but they like it. There's a slide and tree-fort upstairs. And they can feed the fish at the top of the tall tank.

If you go out to eat and want to make the kids happy, I hate to say it, but Old Country Buffet is a big hit.

New Scenic Cafe has an excellent children's menu. Good food, small portions, low prices. That would be better for the grownups along for the ride.

The marine museum at Canal Park would be fun for those ages. They can go in the mock wheel house and pretend they are captains on the lake. My favorite beach with my grandson is at Knife River.....lots of small agates to be found.
