Talk back to Chip

Here’s your chance to let our man in New Hampshire … er, I mean Washington know what we really think. Take the quick survey. I chose the “Tax Increases” option.  I was lucky enough to get this because I’ve sent him email before. I thought many of you might not have known that he’s soliciting opinions, so here you go.

  6. Hi Jim! Here’s hoping that Chippy is as responsive to his constituents as you claim. He’ll be hearing a bunch from them now. BTW, bets on his office making the results of his “survey” available, double bets on whether the data will be scrubbed. Frankly, if he were truly interested in what people thought, he’d make his “survey” a teensy bit more valuable by letting people rank their priorities. I would have like to add “Defense Cuts” to my selection too. Oh, I wanted him to get the point, reasoned and progressive taxes are the mark of an evolved democracy.

  7. First the duck-and-cover:” I did not support this legislation.” Then the BS ” Social Security and Medicare consume 1/3 of the Federal Budget.” In reality SS is self-funding and does not draw from the Treasury. Medicare is mainly a problem because of the huge price increases in the PRIVATE sector. Then the bait-and-switch: $600 billion in defense cuts were supposed to be part of the Super Committee deal, but now that’s too much for the world’s largest military to handle. He is using a bogus survey to forward a sleazy deal which is ultimately intended do away with the paltry remnants of the New Deal. Screw that.

  10. Funny stuff.

Jim: did you know Chip has been drawing a $79,000 union pension for supposedly having sleep apnea, and was a union steward who played an active role in the airline strikes?

    Good times.

Since Cravaack does not require proof of living in the district, I voted.

  11. Being raised in Duluth and now living in New Hampshire, I am curious as to where the New Hampshire pun comes from. I have heard nothing of him being out here. I just want to make sure I am not missing anything!

  12. I’m actually kind of offended that you voted, Lojasmo. You have your own Rep., take your thoughts to them. You want influence in this district, move here.

    Jadiaz | Nov 7, 2011 | New Comment
  13. @Jeff, The Chipster lives with his family in New Hampshire. He recently moved there. He maintains offices and probably some form of apartment in MN. To be fair, Oberstar lived primarily in Washington and used his Mom’s house in Chisholm for the “in-state” address. I just personally happen to think Oberstar’s 8t district creds are significantly more valid.

For me, it’s about accurate representation of the 8th district. Cravaak, is from the northern suburbs and is bringing his version of teabagger conservo-babble to washington instead of really listening to the citizens he’s supposed to represent.

    Baci | Nov 7, 2011 | New Comment
  14. At least Oberstar grew up here, had family here. Cravaack? Not so much?

    Claire | Nov 7, 2011 | New Comment
  15. If it’s bad for one, it’s bad for both. Don’t play the justification game. Obviously a few of us like Chip, a few of us liked Oberstar, and for whatever the reasons, neither one lives/d in MN so let’s not pretend it is ok for one but not the other. There are plenty of other reasons for both sides to harp on. The out of state argument is pure bullshit though if you’re using that as a driving force to get rid of Chip and yet didn’t for Oberstar, and no amount of justification on that point will make the fact that they BOTH decided to live somewhere else.

  17. @Jadiaz — IMHO A representative living in Washington after years of service is significantly different than a freshman rep. getting elected and then bailing the district. But you are correct, there are far more significant issues I have with Cravaak.

  21. I sent Cravaack a letter on an issue, and specifically asked for a written reply. Did I get the written reply? No. Yes the letter was legitimate, included my real name, address, telephone number, email address -- but Cravaack never wrote back to me. I didn’t vote for Cravaack, but I still think if a constituent asks for a reply to an issue, that Cravaack should have the decency to respond. After all, I’m a voter and a citizen. Cravaack will never get my vote.

  22. I think Lojasmo has every right to vote on this survey. If our congressman — whom I regard as a usurper, b/c he moved to another state almost immediately after being elected — were serious about gauging the opinions of his constituents more accurately, he would have done a mailer survey or a phone survey. An online survey is total b.s., because anyone in the world can vote. I can vote 100 times, if I wanted, who’s going to stop me? But then, I don’t think geography means anything to Cravaack. He lives in New Hampshire and represents northeastern Minnesota, for god’s sakes.

    Claire | Nov 8, 2011 | New Comment
  23. Actually, Chip moved to North Branch, MN. His wife and two children moved to NH so that his wife can be closer to her full time job. Chip stays in Washington during the week, Mn on saturdays, and NH on sundays. Those are the facts reported in several articles including several articles. Is his wife not suppose to work? Is it wrong he takes a one day a week away from his work? If you don’t like Chip, fine; I’m just sick of people of the intentional misinformation about the move/ that being mainly Claires bitching point although it was fine for Oberstar for decades.

As far as Lojasmo, two wrongs don’t make a right, Claire and the fact that you seem to think it will shows your character which your comment above says to me is,’Do what you want as long as you’re a Democrat and it helps our cause.’

  24. Jadiz, first and foremost, thank you for the civil discussion. We can agree to disagree about whether Cravaak is right for our district. I DO think that his interest in really representing the best interests of his constituents is out weighed by his adherence to the knee-jerk neo-con Obama=Bad mantra. The fact that he ping-pongs across the country only reinforces the thought that he is serving too many masters, and the IMHO, the true interests of the 8th district are low on that totem pole.

  26. Jadiaz, I honor Cravaack for walking his talk about supporting his wife’s career. But we all know that renting an apartment and spending one day a week in one’s district — which is larger than several U.S. states — is completely ineffective. Why didn’t Cravaack simply move his family to Washington, DC, so that he could actually be a father and an elected official, without pingponging all over the country every week? How much time does Cravaack actually spend in the 8th District? How much time does he actually spend interacting face-to-face with Constituents?

And this isn’t about Oberstar, who wanted to be both a father and an elected official, and thus moved his family to Washington, DC. Oberstar’s doing so was a major talking point among Cravaack’s supporters — it’s only right that Cravaack moving his family to NH within six months of the election is a legitimate talking point among those of us impacted by this move. I’m much more sympathetic to Oberstar’s shuttling between MN and DC than Cravaack pingponging between MN, DC, and NH, 45 mins. north of Boston Longan Airport every weekend. I’d like to know who’s picking up the tab on someone who’s really racking up the miles.

  27. Chip owns a home in North Branch, spends at least Saturdays in district, and when it is a district work week lives in his home in North Branch and works in District. Sundays he spends with his family in NH. When not in MN during district work weeks and saturdays, or NH on sundays, Chip is in DC doing the job he was elected to do. If you can show me proof that he is using federal or state funds and not his own to travel between MN and NH or DC and NH, then I’ll gladly bash him for that and raise my voice to complain about it with you. Just because Chip isn’t constantly in Duluth does not mean he isn’t elsewhere in the District, the majority of which were those who elected him into office, not Duluth. I can agree more time in Duluth would be awesome, and that by ignoring it, he is ignoring a large populace of voters, which isn’t ultimately bright. Overall, Chip lives in MN and DC with the exception of 1 day a week, where he goes to NH to see his family and support his wife in her job. That isn’t Chip leaving or keeping a small apartment here to pacify the masses, that is living in MN and WDC as most politicians do, with the exception of Oberstar from at least 1995 til he was beaten by Chip. Oberstar moved away, Chip didn’t his wife and children did so she can also have a career. Simple google searches hold the correct info and you can get it even from left leaning sites.

  28. Oh and the father bit, Chip wants to see his children and be a father as well, which is why his wife and he decided on her and the childrens move to NH, close to Boston for her work and close to DC for monday when he needs to work. Don’t pull the father card like Chips a heartless bastard who doesn’t want to be a father to his kids. All we have for evidence is his quotes, none of which speak to him NOT wanting to be a good father.

  29. Jadiaz, like I said, I respect Cravaack’s walking his talk re his wife’s career, but it takes more than dropping in on the fam once a week for one day (minus all the travel time involved) to really be a parent. But that’s his business, not mine. But it is my business — and everyone else’s in the 8th — that his family lives halfway across the country, but he’s claiming to live here. My opinion, as I’ve said before, is that a person’s home is where their family makes their home, since as far as I know, he and his wife are not separated. I’d like to know where he’s going to be filing his taxes. And again, maybe for his constituents’ piece of mind, and to assuage concerns that he’s spreading himself muchhhh too thin, his staff could provide us with a detailed schedule of exactly where he is, day by day, for, say, one month. Might provide us with some insights.

By the way, Cravaack is doing pretty well for himself: two homes, flying around the country every weekend… Nice.

  30. AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaagh! The Hypocricy!!! Jimmy NEVER came back to MN unless their was a photo op or a picnic gathering of union thugs. He even showed up at the re-opening of Central Avenue despite having NOTHING to do with it. Jimmy wrote the book on wasteful spending at the taxpayers expense. He even took planes from Blaine to St. Paul on a REGULAR basis! Chip’s spending habits, both personal and as a politician can’t hold a candle to what Jimmy did. Your polluted attempt is truly sick and shows how truly deranged you all are. Do you realize that in the last 10 months Chip has spent more time in MN meeting with his constituents (yes, his CONSTITUENTS!) than Jimmy did in four years? Four is generous. It might be closer to fourteen. And Claire, I’m sorry, but making a snide comment about his wealth is equally sick when compared to Jimmy. Bottom line as you put it, it’s not about Jimmy though, is it? But the question remains, why is it that you remained so silent for all those years when Jimmy racked up millions of dollars of travel debt for his little junkets to all corners of the globe, and why he very rarely came to Minnesota, his “home”, or why he very rarely returned any correspondance relating to issues that didn’t lock in goose-step with his political beliefs? WHY? Because the bastard didn’t give a damn for anything other than his own agenda. That’s why he faced one of the most humilating defeats in the history of congressional politics. Your vile opinions are deserving of anger and retribution. They mimic those of the wasted, unaccomplished, ignorant and incompetent asses that are part of the occupy movement. Quit sucking on the nitrous, get off the government tit and get a fucking job. Come to terms with the fact that you’ve been fed a pile of crap from people like Hussein. Creatures like him are trying to destroy America, and people like you are contributing. And as far as LOFo casting an illegal vote, do you really think he’s kidding? That’s totally the MO of people like him. He’s probably got an acorn tat on his ass. I’m surprised he wasn’t offering cartons of Kools to the inner-city Chicagoans to come and vote.

  32. Jim, first of all, I am not “on the government tit” and I do have a “fucking job,” thank you. Second of all, I think you are wrong about Oberstar visiting the district. I travel a lot for my job and I often saw Oberstar on my plane, where he *never* asked for special favors. Impressed me and disgusted me that his detractors lied about him on that score.

I find it boring that whenever anyone criticizes Cravaack for no longer living in Minny, his supporters bring up Oberstar. Move on, already, Oberstar is no longer our Congressman, Cravaack is. And where he lives is our business.

    Claire | Nov 8, 2011 | New Comment
  33. Except that Cravaack DOES live in MN. North Branch MN. And I’ll kindly remember that we can’t bring up politicians from the past next time anyone wants to bring up Bush when trying to cover for Obama as liberals have been doing since Obama took office.

  34. Claire, I was referring to the Ocu-highs sleeping in tents. I assumed you have a job based on your past posts. That being said, you didn’t dispute the nitrous. I’ll stand by my assertions. I never was invited to ride your plane or Jimmy’s for that matter, as private planes were always way beyond my means. And Jadiaz, keep it up. You’re much more tolerant than me, and for that I say good for you. You’re a better example of the principles I try and live by, except when dealing with these, ahem, ok, nevermind.

  37. Hi, Jadiaz,

We’ve debated this before, but I just can’t let this stand. New Hampshire is nowhere near DC, and certainly nowhere convenient to DC relative to someone with a career in Boston. Whatever Chip’s reasons to live in NH, it’s not the ease of the commute to DC.

    rhetoricguy@gmail.com | Nov 9, 2011 | New Comment
  38. I’m sure when you factor in the 40-45 minute commute each way to Logan from the Cravaacks’s NH home, and the chronic congestion at Logan regarding flights, I’d assume Cravaack is not gaining that much extra time by commuting to DC from New England, rather than from Minnesota. Why isn’t the family living in DC and Mrs. C commuting to Boston from DC? It just doesn’t make sense.

  40. Baci- check your facts before you spew out any more lies. That quote you attributed to Jefferson came out in the 1990′s, dumb ass. Maybe you were thinking George Jefferson??

    Jim | Nov 10, 2011 | New Comment
  41. @Jim, thanks for the fact check! You’re right, in fact this is not attributable to Jefferson. My apologies.

    From monticello.org.

Jefferson wrote in 1825 to William Branch Giles of “a vast accession of strength from their younger recruits, who, having nothing in them of the feelings or principles of ’76, now look to a single and splendid government of an aristocracy, founded on banking institutions, and monied incorporations under the guise and cloak of their favored branches of manufactures, commerce and navigation, riding and ruling over the plundered ploughman and beggared yeomanry.” Chomsky’s 1994 book quotes Jefferson’s 1825 letter to Giles and then comments that “[Jefferson] warned that that would be the end of democracy and the defeat of the American revolution.”

I stand corrected. Thanks for taking the valuable time to keep the conversation here factual. Now how about civility? I’m sure that a paraphrase of Chomsky reflecting on a Jefferson quote holds a lot of water in your doggie dish.

The truth remains that the democratic process is under siege from forces that would seem despicable to Jefferson. I contend chief of these are, media induced apathy in the guise of polarized pundits and supreme court sanctioned big money buying political access on both the left and right.

    Baci | Nov 10, 2011 | New Comment
  42. Aaaah, yes civility. Hmmm. Yes, I’ll ignore your obvious attempts to create inflammatory discussions for the sake of civility.
